Review: Darktribe – Forgotten Reveries

Darktribe are an Italian Band who were founded 16 years ago by brothers Antony Agnello their vocalist and Julian Agnello their original drummer, who left in 2023 and was replaced by Guillaume Morero who plays drums on their new album. The other two founder members, Loic Manuello the guitarist and Bruno Caprani the bassist complete the line up. ‘Forgotten Reveries’ is their fourth album, and their first for five years.
Opening track ‘Paradox’ is a brief but very effective piece of music introduction with a Vangelis type sound to it that gathers pace and becomes a more recognisably rock style instrumental. The second track ‘I Walk Alone’ follows on from the sound of the opener and gets a great start from the bass of Caprani and the drumming of Morello. Antony Agnello delivers the vocals with power and panache and gives the song a presence that raises it to another level.
‘The Fallen World’ starts with an intricate guitar solo from Manuello who shows himself to be a virtuoso throughout this song in particular. There are hints of Queen in the tune, and this is definitely a song that really lifts the album to new heights. ‘Sicilian Danza’ has another very interesting start, reminding me of the tune from Tubular Bells that famously appeared in The Exorcist. Once again, Darktribe take the tune to very interesting places with Agnello providing excellent vocals to complement the tune.
‘Ghost Memories’ is a fast paced song that develops into a Europe style rocker and provides Morero with the opportunity to show how well he can anchor a tune. ‘Eden and Eclipse’ is a rock ballad that reminds me of The Scorpions and wouldn’t be out of place on one of their albums. It’s an excellent track that ends the first half of the album with a flourish.
‘From Star to Dust’ is a song built around the launch of a rocket and its journey to the moon. It’s a track that pays tribute to the bravery of the astronauts who risked their lives for the furtherance of science and the exploration of space. ‘Reality’ is another track that takes an interesting subject matter, namely the difficulty of fighting against the problems we see in the world. It’s a tight song with all four members of the group on top form and is my favourite on the album.
‘Kings in the Sand’ gives Manuello with another excellent solo that never strays into the predictable territory that some may settle for. ‘Mornings of Fear’ is a showcase for Morero whose urgent percussion drives this song and provides a real weight to the track. The final track is ‘Son of Illusion’ which is a superb ballad with a top performance from Agnello that ends the album on a high note.
I really enjoyed this album primarily because it continued to surprise me throughout. Every song contained something that made me think, ‘that’s different’ and all four members of the band proved how effective they were as individuals and as a unit. If you have never listened to Darktribe before, this would be the perfect time to start.
