Review: Electric Boys – Shady Side Of Town EP

For me Sweden’s funky rock maestros Electric Boys are are one of those underrated gems that never get the attention or platitudes that they deserve for the quality of both their recorded material and their live shows. This EP release is something of a throwback to times of old when bands often released EPs on 12” vinyl between Album releases, which contained tracks that perhaps didn’t make it into the final recording of the most recent album. With ‘Shady Side Of Town‘ EP we get 4 songs that just missed out on the excellent 2023 album ‘Grand Explosivos‘ (review here), including what would have been a sure fire hit title track.

It has been quite a while since I took a look at an EP of any kind, but when you only have 4 tracks one thing is for sure you have to grab the listeners attention from the outset. The Electric Boys do that and then some, ‘Head Honchos’ just literally explodes from the speakers, with a sliding intro leading you into deep powerhouse of a riff that sustains right through the song, a real rocker. ‘Grand Explosivos’ is just an absolute killer of a track, it doesn’t transports you into the shady side of town without any doubt, a love song of sorts alongside a warning and a story from the dark side of the tracks. Very funky and to me with a touch of psychedelic about it ‘Looking for Vajajay’ keeps the party going and the saddest thing about this EP is of course that it’s nowhere near long enough, how can we be at the last song already, it doesn’t seem fair. ‘Keep It Dark’ is another absolutely killer track, for me the most closely related to classic rock and a bit of a 70’s vibe to it, but it’s also really fresh and has guitars weaving all over it, alongside ‘Grand Explosivos’ this could fit nicely on any album release.

The blend of funk and rock is not very often something that achieved successfully, but Electric Boys have managed to to it for a career and their signature sound blasts you at the same time as hitting that groove, Perfect stuff here, and if these songs aren’t set for the next album we have some great music to look forward to hearing whatever the guys are coming up with. Very talented band, musicians that just impress be it on recording or live and a singer that nails it every time.

It’s natural that some people will just assume that this is just a release of some tracks not good enough for the last album, or that they don’t fit the image for the next album, but no these are 100% Electric Boys songs and it would have been a real shame had they gone into an archive somewhere. Do yourself a favour and pick this one up, if you don’t know the band well an inexpensive way to get an introduction, each of the songs here has it’s own style and shining through as a common thread of course is that powerful funky drive, I particularly love the bass on ‘Looking for Vajajay‘. Bring EP’s back if they are as good as this one, not just a load of remixes or edits of one song, 4 new tracks of a very high quality, great stuff.
