Finger Eleven are a Canadian band who have been together since their school days. They have released seven albums with the first coming in 1997. However, ‘Last Night on Earth’ is their first original album since ‘Five Crooked Lines’ in 2015. The current line up consist of Scott Anderson on vocals, James Black on lead guitar, Rick Jackett on rhythm guitar, Sean Anderson on bass and Steve Molella on drums. So, let’s dive in and take a listen.

Opening track ‘Adrenaline’ has a Sean Anderson bass line that reminds me of the glam rock era of the seventies. When Anderson starts singing, he is immediately impressive with the strength and depth of his voice. It’s a classic rock voice in both senses of the phrase. Second track ‘Blue Sky Mystery’ starts with a superb riff courtesy of James Black and great rhythm guitar from Rick Jackett and features the vocalist from Filter, Richard Patrick, whose voice works brilliantly on this version of the track.

‘Cold Concrete’ is a song that really benefits from Sean Anderson’s bass playing and the unshowy drums of Steve Molella who gives the group a fantastic base from which to work throughout the album. ‘Lock Me Up‘ is a 80s style rock song that blends a really good melody with Black’s crunching guitar work. It’s a superb track that really hits the spot. Title track ‘Last Night on Earth’ is a highlight on the album, and to be honest it would be a highlight on any album. It reminded me of Genesis and Mike and the Mechanics with Anderson doing a great job of channelling the brilliant Paul Carrack, one of rock music’s most underrated vocalists.

The second half of the album starts off with ‘The Mountain’ a no nonsense rock song that just pounds out of the speakers with real venom. It’s a superb performance from Molella whose percussion drives this song with energy and intensity. ‘Perfect Effigy’ once again puts me in mind of Genesis at the start before cranking up the volume and moving into heavy rock territory with real aplomb.

‘Wall Dogs’ is simply gorgeous. It’s a rock ballad of the highest quality and it’s another stand out on an album that doesn’t have a weak track on it. ‘Laughing at the Storm’ gives Scott Anderson another opportunity to let his growling voice have an airing before the quieter moments shows another side to him with a subtle performance that gives a real emotional kick to this track. ‘Body and Mind’ is a country rock style number that had me thinking of Dire Straits’ ‘The Man’s Too Strong’ with its deceptive power.

The final track is Finger Eleven’s own version of the track ‘Blue Sky Mystery’. It is perhaps the heaviest track on the album and goes back to the wall of sound provided by the triple guitars of Black, Jackett and Anderson with Molella once again showing his prowess as one of the best drummers around.

This is an excellent album from start to finish and if you are able to catch Finger Eleven live, I would really advise you to get along and enjoy Canada’s finest.
