Review: Fury – Interceptor

UK based band Fury are about to release their latest album ‘Interceptor‘ and have something different to offer fans compared to past album releases. Going from a four-piece band, they decided to add the talents of Nyah Ifill, a powerhouse of a vocalist. She was the former vocalist of the band Aramantus, a progressive groove metal band that, thankfully, bears no resemblance to Fury. The contrast between her vocals and co-lead Julian Jenkins creates a magic that elevates the band, making this one of the strongest albums I have heard this year.
But I seem to be getting a little ahead of myself. Fury is not a band I see discussed often, so many may not be familiar with the band. Picture a party band playing heavy metal…that’s their sound – Poison meets Striker. Heavy and fun.
The album kicks off with first single ‘Interceptor’ and I was immediately hooked. What stood out immediately was the chorus. The juxtaposition of the lead vocals of Julian and the backgrounds from Nyah make for a sound that stands out from the pack of bands who perform with similar combos. They mesh and compliment each other incredibly well. Strong, fast, heavy, and a great way to open the album.
However, Track 2 threw me for a loop, in a good way. Thinking I knew what the band had to offer, ‘What’s It Gonna Be’ is a completely different animal. Nyah takes the lead here for a hard rock blues-based banger! The band has since gone on to release this song as a single, but back when I heard this track in late June, it got me PUMPED! One of the top tracks of the year for me.
From there the album goes back and forth, touching on various genres and styles, all with successful results. You got fist pumping hard rockers like ‘On The Town’, ‘Look At Us Now’, and ‘DTR’ (Down To Rock). Heavy bass groovers like ‘Don’t Lie To Me’, and even Country-tinged rock ballads like ‘Walk Away’, which sounds like they stole the song from Cory Marks before he had the chance to record it.
The album is chock full of melodious vocables. Whoo, Oohh, and Ahhs, are sprinkled around like seasoning on many tracks, but they take front and center on tracks like ‘In Pursuit of Destiny’ and ‘Don’t Lie To Me’, with the latter tracks use of it reminding me of ‘The Greatest Show’ for The Greatest Showman Soundtrack.
A strong contribution to the overall feel lies in the recording. The production is sonic perfection! A truly powerful sound from the band courtesy of producer Todd Campbell, guitarist for Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons. He has previously worked with Motörhead, Sepultura, Fozzy, and others. The man is an expert at his craft.
The band sounds like they are having a blast playing these songs and their energy is infectious! If any album breaks this band wide open, it will be this one. A fantastic release that is not to be missed.
