Review: Nighthawk – Six Three O

Nighthawk are a Swedish band who have released three albums. ‘Six Three O’ is their fourth. It was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, the same studio space used by groups like Queen and Oasis. They are a five-piece band consisting of Robert Majd on guitar Björn Strid providing the vocals, John Lönnmyr on keyboards, drummer Magnus Ulfstedt and bassist Rasmus Ehrnborn. So, what does their fourth album have to offer?

‘Hard Rock Warrior’ does exactly what it promises and starts the album off with a bang. All five parts of the band are working together superbly on this track but the guitar of Robert Majd is the real standout. ‘Wrong Side of Desire’ is a great second track with a no nonsense tune that will sound great live and superb vocals from Bjorn Strid. It is a throwback to the best of 80s melodic rock but with a satisfyingly hard edge.

‘Home Tonight’ starts with another fantastic guitar riff from Majd, complemented by John Lönnmyr on keyboards. It is another really enjoyable track that, like the first two doesn’t overcomplicate the process. This group know what makes a great tune and they definitely deliver.

‘Angel of Mine’ once again mines the melodic rock seam with a track that countrymen Europe would have been happy to put their names to. ‘Can’t Say Goodbye’ has a synth keyboard riff accompanied by a strong vocal and it reminds me a lot of ‘I Surrender’ by Rainbow and this track is definitely one of my favourites on the album.

‘I am the Night’ has a superb bass and drum groundwork as Magnus Ulfstedt and Rasmus Ehrnborn ramp up the power and are met by one of Strid’s best vocals. Majd adds a good riff to this but it is definitely the track that really shows the ability of the engine room of this (and any other) band.

‘Losing My Mind’ once again reflects their early 80s rock sensibilities with a track that reins back the heavy rock of some of the other tracks and allows the harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, time to breathe. It’s yet another excellent track. ‘Too Good to You’ is perhaps the heaviest track on the album and it thunders out of the speakers with an incredibly catchy tune that has real heft behind it.

‘Cut You Loose’ starts with my favourite guitar riff on the album which would sound brilliant live and give Majd room for a storming solo. The penultimate track is ‘Turn to Me’ which is a rock ballad that showcases Strid and shows that he is a vocalist of real quality and real versatility. It is a fantastic example of the genre that would have been a massive single back in the day.

The album finishes with ‘Man on the Silver Mountain’ which allows the band one more opportunity to show how powerful they are as an outfit. It is a great finish to a top quality selection of rock songs.

I have no hesitation in saying that this is definitely my favourite album of the year so far. There is not one song that is an absolute standout because the quality across the board is so high. Their tight knit sound is one that only a band that truly understand the genre and the songs can put together so consistently. It is an album you simply must listen to.
