Review: Corvus – Immortals

Corvus have returned with their second album ‘Immortals’. The UK band formed back in 2012 and released their debut album in 2015. It completely went under my radar, so this is the first album I have heard from the band. Their classic rock sound was compared to other bands like Creye and Ten. This piqued my interest and I decided to check out their album.
After one playthrough, it has all the makings of a solid rock album. Catchy hooks, melodious tones, strong solos, and background singing done effectively well. Musicianship-wise, my only issue would be it’s a little generic and lacks the punchiness that gets my blood flowing.
With that said, I put off starting this review as I would walk away from the album and return to it after a day or so to see if my thoughts on it would change. They have not. There’s one issue I have with the album and unfortunately it brings the whole release down for me. I can’t get past the vocal stylings of singer Alex Pettersen.
While his sound it unique, it just does not work for me. His approach reminds of American singer Charlie Sexton and various other singers prevalent in the early 80s New Wave genre. While some people love that type of delivery, it’s never been a genre I have listened to for that specific reason. I was hoping the rock vibe of the band would make me see this release in a different light, but I was detracted by the vocals with every return.
I hate giving a negative review to a band that has some quality songs and musicianship, but the vocals are a critical element for me. I listen to all types of singers, some that others absolutely loathe, and I can still enjoy the band immensely. This type of lower register, almost talky style of singing leads me to dislike every song here.
If that type of vocal style is your thing, then you will certainly get more out of this album than I did. I would suggest you check out the album online and make up your own mind. The songs are strong and if the vocals are to your liking, you’re sure to find some well-constructed, catchy tracks.
