‘God’s Honest Truth’ is the fourth track to be released from ‘Flawed By Design‘, following ‘This Is Happening Now’, ‘Don’t Look Down’ and ‘Chains’. ‘This Is Happening Now’ featured in Classic Rock magazine’s Hot List, with the magazine describing it as “a meaty heartfelt anthem with socialpolitical heart, featuring some of the biggest, classiest guitar action and singalong value of their career”.
The new single began as a riff captured on a phone and an idea that spent months taking shape during rehearsals. With time available at the studio to record one final track, the band decided to revisit it. That decision would have a much bigger impact on the album, with the song’s themes inspiring the title ‘Flawed By Design‘, its artwork and the wider concept behind the record.
Frontman Wayne Doyle says ”At the time of writing, I was going through the loss of a friend and contemplating what the point of it all was. If we are the product of a higher power or higher being, then I considered how can anyone ‘almighty’ allow that sort of thing to happen. Which led me to think that – in order for any higher power to allow that, then surely, they themselves are flawed… Does Humanity as the ‘creation’, also inherit the same quality? If so, with the birth of AI becoming a thing that Humanity has created, we would also pass that trait into what create…
We then watch how the highest powers of society have designed a way of life where the ordinary man, gets stuck in the everyday cycle, living to work, putting our trust in these people to act in our best interests, whilst that trust gets taken advantage of. Whilst they all play by their own rules, using and hiding behind the apparent ‘gospel’ that was written centuries ago, to justify their actions.”
Wayne feels that a loss of humanity is increasingly apparent, a theme reflected in the diminishing hearts featured on the album artwork.
That imagery also became the starting point for the ‘God’s Honest Truth’ video. Inspired by retro computer games, where a character’s health is represented by a row of hearts that disappear as they take damage, the band wanted to bring the concept into a music video and connect it to the album’s wider themes. The result is a visual approach unlike anything Scarlet Rebels have done before.
The band are thrilled to be able to celebrate the release of the album with new record store show dates during release week. Wayne adds “Being able to get in front of and meet everyone that’s stood tall for us for so long is really important to us. Being able to strip the songs back to their barest nature as well as having a few full band shows gives us and our Rebel Club the opportunity to celebrate the release of ‘Flawed By Design’ in style.”
Alongside stripped-back performances at the in-store tour, more dates will include full-band shows, offering different ways to hear the songs from ‘Flawed By Design‘.
