Review: L.E.G.A.C.Y. – Midnight Riot

Rising from the success of Neon Rider’s 2024 debut ‘Destination Unknown‘, L.E.G.A.C.Y. delivers their take on 80s-inspired melodic rock. Their claim is to craft anthems that echo the spirit of bands like Journey, FM, Perfect Plan, and Survivor, but with a modern, energized edge.  That is quite an ambitious statement. After a few playthroughs, there is one aspect that creates an obvious disconnect.

While the music is solid, the one drawback is the vocals of Marcos Nieva Green. It’s a bold claim to compare your music to such classic acts like Journey and Survivor, bands that have arguably the strongest vocalists of the genre. Marcos‘ vocals are adequate, but lack range and power.  Vocals can make or break an album. The strongest songs in the world can be diminished if the emoting and passion are deficient.

The mid-tempo songs benefit from this restraint. Recent single ‘My Inner Peace‘ works with his delivery, matching the whimsical melodicism of the piece. The ballad ‘My Star Ain’t Gonna Shine‘ is also solid due to its quieter nature and smoother delivery.

Other tracks like the rhythmically exciting ‘Ride The Thunder‘ and ‘Savage Seduction‘ could be solid belters. They have all the ingredients needed except the key one. The vocals hold these songs back. All of the uptempo tracks, including first single ‘Midnight Riot‘, are diminished as a result.

This is going to be a short review as there is really nothing else that can be said. I would like to talk about a few more songs, but nothing really moved me. I feel Marcos is biting off more than he can chew with the style the band is chasing. The band either needs to get a stronger vocalist or change their sound to get more in line with Marcos‘ more natural range. I’ve played this album several times over, hoping it would grow on me. Unfortunately, I have no desire to revisit these songs again.
