Review: Heart Line – Falling Heaven

French Melodic Rock outfit Heart Line returns with ‘Falling Heaven’, an album that not only embraces the grandeur of the ‘80s AOR and Hard Rock scene but injects it with a fresh sense of Gallic passion. In a genre often dominated by Scandinavian and North American acts, Heart Line confidently throws their hat into the ring, delivering a record that feels both reverential and refreshingly original.

From the first spin, ‘Falling Heaven’ impresses with a punchy production, steeped in the warmth of a vintage ‘80s soundscape. While a touch more separation in the mix could enhance the overall clarity, it’s clear that the band has purposefully aimed for an authentic retro feel – and they succeed admirably. The band is a quintet: Emmanuel Creis (vocals), Yvan Guillevic (guitars), Jorris Guilbaud (keyboards), Dominique Braud (bass), and Walter Français (drums).

So, let’s dive into the album itself. ‘Fire In The Sky’ kicks off in style with a vibrant keyboard and guitar intro reminiscent of Journey. This quickly gives way to a driving rocker, its rhythm section pushing the song along with relentless energy. A scorching guitar solo seals the deal, making for a thrilling opener. This is followed by ‘God Has A Plan For You’ – A chugging, classic riff that wouldn’t feel out of place on an Accept record lays the foundation for this mid-tempo rocker. The chorus is sturdy and anthemic, making for a solid entry.

‘Everytime You Smile’ is keyboard-led track with a cinematic quality, this song could have been lifted straight from a blockbuster ‘80s movie soundtrack. It’s a more delicate moment on the album, showcasing Heart Line’s ability to balance power with melody. ‘Falling Heaven’ follows, the title track is a melting pot of influences, blending elements of Giuffria, Dokken, and Tesla into a seamless whole. The vocals soar with impassioned intensity, while the tasteful guitar work recalls the finesse of Ritchie Blackmore. The chorus is undeniably powerful and built for arena-sized singalongs.

‘Liar’ is a high-energy rocker that gallops along with urgency, drenched in that classy retro ‘80s Melodic Rock charm. Pure adrenaline. ‘You Crossed The Line’ earns a high compliment, evoking the sound of Signal’s ‘Loud & Clear’ album. Big hooks, soaring vocals, and a polished yet organic energy make this one a standout. ‘Silent Dreamers’ is the album’s elegant power ballad, boasting the kind of grandiosity Diane Warren might have penned for ‘80s Heart. A sweeping, emotional moment that adds depth to the album’s pacing.

‘We Rule The Night’ is a chest-thumping, fist-in-the-air anthem with shades of vintage Dio. This one doesn’t hold back, embodying the larger-than-life spirit of classic heavy rock. ‘I Don’t Want To Live Without You’ is next, a more understated and transatlantic AOR-styled track with a cool retro aesthetic. It demonstrates the band’s versatility, shifting gears while maintaining the album’s cohesive identity.

‘Wake Up’ follows, one of the album’s definitive highlights, which features a blistering lead guitar and a sophisticated melodic rock approach. There’s an undeniable touch of long-lost AOR heroes Biloxi in its DNA, adding a welcome layer of nostalgia. ‘Love Song’ embodies effortless AOR bliss. Timeless, perfectly executed, and showcasing everything to love about the genre. The guitar solo is simply tremendous, elevating the song to classic status.

‘Broken Heart’ closes the album with style, this track begins with a delicate acoustic intro before launching into a powerful, anthemic hard rock piece. The chorus is massive, and the closing moments, featuring subtle acoustic slide guitars, bring the album to a beautifully reflective conclusion.

Heart Line has crafted an album that wears its influences proudly while ensuring it stands tall in the modern melodic rock landscape. ‘Falling Heaven’ is a thrilling ride through the golden era of AOR, with strong songwriting, great musicianship, and an infectious passion for the genre.

While the production could benefit from a bit more refinement in separation, it’s a minor gripe in what is otherwise excellent offering. If you’re a fan of soaring melodies, searing guitars, and that unmistakable ‘80s rock magic, ‘Falling Heaven’ should be considered a definite ‘must listen’. A job well done – I tip my hat to them.
