Review: Leadfeather – Roll The Dice (EP)

New rock band Leadfeather have only been together since 2024, but they are already getting noticed by rock music lovers. Their debut release is an EP called ‘Roll the Dice’ which features 6 tracks to set out their stall to existing fans and potential converts. They consist of lead singer Apostolos, guitarist, composer and founder of the band Simon Hurts, bass player Daniel Devis and drummer Thanos. Their debut release is on February 14, but will it capture the hearts of rock music fans?
The opening track ‘Roll the Dice’ is a high octane start to this EP which sets out their stall as a heavy rock band with a sound that reminds me of 90s rock band Skin who were, for me, one of the best rock bands of their era. They build their tight sound on the guitar work of Simon Hurts and the bass of Daniel Devis, supported by the excellent unshowy drumming of Thanos. Apostolos on vocals simply tears into the song with real passion and a tremendous range which gives it a drive that only the best rock singers can provide. ‘Silver Feathers’ is a bluesy instrumental that brings the tempo down and provides Hurts with a showcase for his softer edged guitar playing. ‘Higher’ returns to the energy and urgency of the opening track to start with before developing a softer sound that gives the listener the sense that at no point are they going to be able to second guess the band. It’s brave on your debut EP to demonstrate such versatility, but it definitely works.
‘Danger Zone’ is a Southern rock influenced track that reminded me of Lynyrd Skynyrd especially at the start. Apostolos’ voice is perfectly suited to this song as he delivers a mixture of assured calmness on the verses and an intense high-pitched approach that makes the chorus soar. ‘Shoot for the Stars’ is a guitar led no nonsense rock tune that will be fantastic live. It recalls a number of different acts but more than any other track on this EP it is their own as they weave together the influences to create a song that would grace any rock album. It’s definitely the standout track on this EP.
The final track ‘Why’ is a ballad that shows once again how good a voice Apostolos has. It is also, perhaps, the best example of the Hurts’ guitar, Devis’ bass and Thanos’ drumming working together as one entity to create a song that, along with the previous track, sets out the band’s stall as a new group to keep an eye on. It shows the direction I think they should, and will, take in their subsequent releases. They stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before, but they have a sound of their own that could make them a force to be reckoned with in the next few years.
