Review: Mystery Moon – Shine
Pride & Joy Music (November 22nd 2024)

When two creative forces collide, the results can often be electrifying—and ‘Shine’, the debut album from melodic hard rock outfit Mystery Moon, is no exception. Born out of a serendipitous collaboration between German guitarist and songwriter Markus Pfeffer (of Lazarus Dream and Atlantis Drive fame) and Swedish vocal powerhouse Rob Lundgren (Mentalist), this record is a masterclass in sophisticated, soul-stirring rock with a mystical edge. Originally intended as a one-off project for Pfeffer‘s all-star endeavour Barnabas Sky, their artistic chemistry demanded more than just a single track. The result is an 11-track sonic odyssey that more than lives up to its ambitious origins.
From the moment the seven-minute opener ‘Now’s The Time’ kicks in, listeners are drawn into a lush soundscape of groovy guitar riffs, shimmering keyboards, and jaw-dropping vocal harmonies. The track’s final, opulent a cappella section—crafted with over 100 layered vocal tracks—sets the tone for an album that isn’t afraid to push musical boundaries.
‘Mystery Moon’ masterfully balances power and nuance throughout ‘Shine’. Tracks like ‘Mindset’ and ‘Nature’s Way’ surprise with their subtle flute melodies woven into otherwise heavy compositions, creating a contrast that feels both fresh and mesmerizing. Pfeffer’s guitar work is at its heaviest and grooviest here, yet it never overshadows the atmospheric keyboard arrangements, which give the album its distinctive, otherworldly vibe.
Highlights abound: ‘The Hidden Magic’ stuns with its oriental-tinged melodies and blistering riffs, while ‘Moment of Life’ is a soaring power ballad that celebrates life’s transformative moments. Fans of Judas Priest’s late ’80s era will revel in the thunderous energy of ‘Sudden Rupture’, a track that channels the grit and glory of classic metal. The album closes with the epic ‘Stars A Million Miles Away’ an eight-minute journey inspired by Lundgren’s deeply personal childhood experience of gazing at the infinite night sky—a moment that clearly informs the grandeur and introspection that define the album.
What truly sets ‘Shine’ apart is its attention to detail. Pfeffer not only wrote and performed much of the instrumentation but also engineered and mixed the album with precision, ensuring every note resonates. Mastering duties were entrusted to JK Northrup, while the stunning cover artwork by Artistic Ramzan encapsulates the mystical essence of the music within.
The album’s lineup features an impressive array of contributors, including Thomas Rieder on drums, Thomas Nitschke on keyboards, and Sabrina Roth, whose flute melodies and backing vocals add layers of depth to several tracks. These contributions enhance, rather than overpower, the central partnership of Pfeffer and Lundgren—a testament to the careful balance struck in the album’s production.
For fans of acts like Atlantis Drive, Barnabas Sky, and Mentalist, ‘Shine’ is a must-listen. It’s a record that dares to explore uncharted territory in melodic hard rock while staying true to the genre’s emotional and technical roots. With ‘Shine’, Mystery Moon doesn’t just light up the sky—they blaze a trail for others to follow. Released through the always excellent Pride & Joy Music label, this is a ‘must have’ album. So, you know what you need to do! File under essential!
