Album Review: Frozen Crown – The Legend Of The Six Kings

I was fortunate to catch Frozen Crown just a few days ago on their first North American tour opening up for Kamelot and Visions of Atlantis. While it was a short seven song set, the band spent more than half the set playing songs from their new album ‘The Legend Of The Six Kings‘. I found their performance to be fantastic, with one exception, which I’ll get to later.

I discovered the band with their last album ‘War Hearts‘ (review here). While I dug the album, my biggest critique was the album felt a bit lopsided. It was full throttle intensity for the first six tracks. I would have appreciated a variety of melodies for a better ebb and flow. Thankfully, this album delivers in that regard. All three singles offer a different feel, with my favorite being the best song they’ve recorded, ‘Reborn’. Perhaps purists will scoff at this as it’s not their traditional double bass power metal sound. For me, it’s melodic heavy metal bliss. It sets its hooks in me upon first listen, and I’ve been playing it repeatedly for weeks now.

Outside of the singles, the rest of the album has some terrific melodies and constructs, but a few notable misses. Let’s start with the positives. The album starts with the shot off the bow ‘Lightning In The Sky’. Double bass intensity, fast paces riffage, and fantastically strong vocals from Giada “Jade” Etro. It’s both expected and exhilarating.

Another standout is ‘Winter Hearts’, which also has the same intensity but is effectively spaced out in the album order. This track also sprinkles in growl vocals from guitarist Federico Mondelli. While not a fan of growl vocals generally, a bit sprinkled about has a nice contrasting effect that adds a cool dynamic to the sonics.

‘To The Stars’ slows things down a bit while maintaining a powerful feel, only letting up a bit to add a softness to the chorus with Giada’s vocal delivery over a chorus that is in a slightly higher key with subtle background keys added to make it sound fuller.

Along with the singles released, there’s some great tracks on hand here, but there’s two that detract that I will never revisit. When I saw the band live, they added a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls track ‘Iris’ into their seven-song set. I remember thinking: 1) This is an awful cover of the song and 2) Why would a band add a cover to such a short set? I got my answer when I went to review this album, and low and behold, it’s a track on the album. Unfortunately, it’s still terrible.  I love when bands take songs outside the genre and metalize them, but here the drums are too frenetic and the lyrics about sorrow and longing don’t work with speed metal. The song ends up sounding like it was recorded for shits and giggles, and I’m sure the band did not mean for that to happen.

The other song that put me off is the title track. I stated earlier that I can appreciate growl vocals scattered about. In the album closer, Federico sings half of the song and it’s too grating for me.  Your love for this song will depend on your tolerance for this style of vocals. Another issue is the varied tempo changes, with drums that at times are played at Dragonforce speed, which is also personally off putting. There’s way too much going on here. It’s like the band crammed a ten-minute epic into a five-minute song.

Overall, I found this album to be an uptick from their last release. The variations certainly help and the favored tracks here are a bit stronger than the ones off the last album. Fans of the band will certainly be pleased. For those new to them, this could be a good starting point, showing the band’s capabilities. They can write some catchy, fast, and melodic tracks, easily keeping up with their contemporaries. I’m hoping this recent tours brings them new fans as I would love to see them return to our shores someday and hear a full setlist from them.
