Sometimes, the involvement of a single musician is enough to guarantee a certain level of quality. Such is the case with CyHra. At the heart of the band is guitarist and songwriter Jesper Strömblad, a genuine giant of the Swedish metal scene whose résumé reads like a history of modern melodic death metal itself. As a founding member of In Flames, The Halo Effect, Dimension Zero, The Resistance, Sinergy, Nightrage, All Ends, and even HammerFall, while also having served as bassist for Ceremonial Oath, Strömblad has left an indelible mark on heavy music over the past three decades. Quite simply, he is one of metal’s great creative forces.

Joining Jesper in CyHra are vocalist Joacim “Jake E” Keelyn (ex-Amaranthe), guitarist Euge Valovirta (ex-Shining), guitarist Marcus Sunesson (Ronnie Atkins, The Crown, Engel), and drummer Alex Landenburg (Kamelot, Annihilator, Axxis). On paper alone, the collective pedigree is deeply impressive, making CyHra something of a melodic metal supergroup. It should also be noted that Jesper handles bass duties here in addition to his trademark guitar work.

Requiem For A Pipe Dream‘ marks the band’s fourth studio album and continues their evolution as one of Sweden’s most polished melodic metal outfits. Unsurprisingly, echoes of In Flames occasionally surface throughout the record. After all, Strömblad was responsible for much of the songwriting that helped define the Gothenburg sound and establish In Flames as one of the genre’s most influential bands. The key difference here lies in Jake E’s hugely melodic vocal approach, which adds a more accessible and immediately memorable dimension to the material without sacrificing any of its metallic bite.

CyHra are also refreshingly unashamed in their use of modern production techniques. Loops, samples, programming, and triggers are woven throughout the album’s fabric, enhancing rather than diluting the songs. Lesser bands can sometimes lose their identity beneath such embellishments, but CyHra understand precisely how to balance technology with musicianship. The result is a sound that feels contemporary and polished while remaining driven by razor-sharp riffs, muscular rhythms, and powerful melodies.

Listening to the album, it becomes impossible not to hear traces of the wider Gothenburg scene. Elements of In Flames, The Halo Effect, Soilwork, and Dark Tranquillity all seem to drift through the band’s DNA at various points. That is hardly surprising given the shared musical heritage of many of those musicians. Rather than feeling derivative, however, CyHra absorb those influences and reshape them into something distinctly their own. Production duties have been kept in-house, with Jake E and Euge Valovirta overseeing the record, and the pair deserve considerable credit for crafting such a huge, vibrant, and contemporary-sounding album.

Of course, impressive credentials and pristine production only take a band so far. Ultimately, it is the songs that determine whether an album succeeds or fails – and thankfully, CyHra have arrived armed with some of the strongest material of their career. Here is a band in truly formidable form, delivering an album that fairly drips with class. The balance between power and melody is expertly judged, while the songwriting remains focused and purposeful throughout. If there is any justice, this album should propel the band to even greater heights.

Whether it’s the blistering opener ‘Bleed With Pride’, the almost Linkin Park-tinged ‘Miss Me When I’m Gone’ (and yes, it really does have that feel), or the expansive and beautiful ‘In The Centre Of A Miracle’, here is a band exploring every aspect of what makes them so compelling. ‘Ghost I’m Meant To Be’ is classic Melodeath and carries a distinctly vintage In Flames flavour, while ‘Venom In Me’ is a veritable melodic metal powerhouse. Meanwhile, album closer ‘Hold Your Fire’ (featuring Samy Elbanna of Lost Society) is another rip-snorting rocker, bringing proceedings to a suitably ferocious conclusion.

In summary, ‘Requiem For A Pipe Dream‘ finds CyHra operating at the very peak of their considerable powers. Combining the melodic sensibilities of classic Scandinavian metal with modern production values and genuinely memorable songwriting, the band has delivered an album that feels both contemporary and timeless. Jesper Strömblad’s compositional fingerprints are unmistakable throughout, but it is the collective strength of the entire band that makes this record so compelling. Powerful, polished, and packed with standout moments, this is undoubtedly one of the strongest melodic metal releases of the year and an essential listen for genre fans.
