Review: Adam Norsworthy – Shadow On The Hill
Park Hall (January 23rd, 2026)
Reviewer: Paul Dubbelman
Many listeners will know Adam Norsworthy as a fiery guitarist with The Milk Men or the charismatic frontman of The Mustangs. ‘Shadow on the Hill’ however, reminds us that behind those blistering live performances is a thoughtful songwriter and accomplished multi-instrumentalist with a gift for mood, melody, and emotional honesty.
This is Norsworthy’s sixth solo album, recorded at Park Hall Studios in London and mixed and mastered by long-time collaborator Wayne Proctor. Apart from Tim Weller (The Divine Comedy) on drums, Norsworthy plays everything himself, and the intimacy of that approach is felt throughout. Together, he and Proctor have created a cohesive atmosphere that gently pulls the listener in and encourages you to follow the narrative arc from start to finish.
That arc charts the slow collapse of an intense relationship, used cleverly as a metaphor for a wider sense of global unease. The opening instrumental, ‘All The Red Things‘, sets the tone with calming guitars, swirling strings, and shimmering cymbals. From there, the emotional temperature rises and falls: ‘Holding You Down’ brings urgency with insistent keyboards and a powerful guitar hook, while ‘I’ll Stand By Her’ rolls along like a country classic, full of resolve and quiet hope.
Elsewhere, Norsworthy excels at capturing vulnerability. ‘Telephone Silence’ aches with loneliness, its strummed acoustic and slide guitar framing a deeply affecting vocal. ‘Nothing Will Repair Me’ dips into darker territory, evoking a sixties chanson with mandolin textures and hushed delivery, before ‘Let Her Get On With Her Life’ offers a lighter, airier sense that healing might be possible. The rootsy blues of ‘Keep On Living’ and the title track’s country-tinged lament underline the album’s themes of loss, memory, and perseverance.
Closing instrumental ‘September’ mirrors the opening, bringing the journey full circle. ‘Shadow on the Hill’ is a beautifully crafted, immersive album, rich in subtle detail and emotional depth. Released on 23rd January 2026 on Norsworthy’s Park Hall label, it stands as one of his most complete and rewarding solo statements to date.
