Review: The Bros. Landreth – Dog Ear

Canadian Juno award winning roots rockers The Bros. Landreth have delivered a fine album with their latest release ‘Dog Ear‘.
The brothers’ musical ship is moored firmly in the late 1960’s and 1970’s Americana sea, but charts it’s own course into interesting waters.
There are elements of Little Feat, Ry Cooder, John Martyn, The Byrds and others in their choppsical array, but with a strong independent ethos.
David Landreth‘s vocals remind me of a hybrid of Paul Simon and Chis Stapleton with a nice soul twist, while brother Joey‘s guitarwork is way cool, with some jazzy, folky touches and a reverb soaked Link Wray groove…they are supported by a fine piratical crew of Muso’s!.
Standout tracks for me personally..’Knuckles‘ with a beautiful vocal from singer Begonia and it’s summery feel.’Wide Awake And Dreaming‘ with it’s great structure and slide guitar, Bonnie Raitt guesting with a vengeance.’Vincent‘, its soft lilting melodies and great Eagles like chorus swooping high and low. ‘Half Of Me‘, a Ry Cooder vibe along with subtle, sentimental soul steeped poignancy which captivates.
But…..my fave track of all is ‘I’ll Drive‘, a noughties road anthem and set opener if I ever heard one!..Taste the dust and gravel!
This is a fine addition to the Americana pantheon. I can envision myself lying poolside in the hot beating sun, Jack and coke, pack of Malboro lights and a hidden doobie in the box enjoying this album on the boombox next to me…might have to test that theory.
