Review: Troy Redfern – Retribution

Review: Troy Redfern – Retribution

Independent (November 27th, 2025)

Reviewer – Dan Mann

I’m always pleased when Troy releases some new music. Although there’s always that little niggle in the back of one’s mind, will I enjoy it like the other stuff? What if I don’t and I’m then having to write a review of a mate’s music….gulp!

Thankfully, of course, I was being silly, and I’ve given myself a stern telling off. Mr. Redfern has once again delivered the goods. Nine tracks of incredible and intense guitar work. I must from the offset mention the production. The fact this is an independent release does in no way mean the production is poor. The guitar has room to breathe, the drums have the sort of impact you want.

Those of you familiar with Troy‘s work will already know what to expect. However, to my lugholes, ‘Retribution‘ sees Troy stepping up a gear. I’m never an expert in matters musical, but I feel that the songs have a maturity, a more insightful impact if you will.

The first standout song for me, from the nine on offer, is ‘The Road to Retribution Pt.1‘. I could easily see it as being the title track for a TV series along the lines of Yellowstone or Landman, if you get my drift. ‘The Road to Retribution Pt.2‘ is also outstanding. The beginning being part Duane Eddy, part Ry Cooder. Both songs are incredibly atmospheric, with Pt.2 having a wide sounscape that just draws you in.

Blood Moon‘ also really grabbed me, a 2 minutes and 15 second instrumental of some incredible guitar work.

The remaining six songs didn’t disappoint I must add, the aforementioned three songs just hit that sweet spot you get on any release.

To sum up, if you’re already a Troy Redfern fan then you’ll quite probably have ‘Retribution‘ on pre-order.

If Troy is an artist you’re not familiar with and you fancy hearing one of the best slide guitarists around, then get yourselves a copy – here. You won’t regret it!
