Review: Tapeworm Electric – Moonshine
Pitch Black Records (October 31st, 2025)
Reviewer – David Brighouse
Tapeworm Electric are a female fronted Rock band formed in Athens, Greece in 2018, and who released their debut EP ‘Fire’ the following year. The band members are heavily influenced by the British Hard Rock of the 1970s. Newly signed to Pitch Black Records they are now ready to unveil their first full length album ‘Moonshine‘ on 31st October.
The album kicks off with Interlude’ a short instrumental of blues slide guitar with added clicks and crackles to give the impression you’re listening to an old 45. The title track then kicks in with a spiralling riff and driving rhythm followed by Argyro Igkilizian’s vocal, which remind me of Beth Hart having great power and soul, and I think is a love song of sorts with rather oblique references to ‘Drop D’ tuning and ‘Earthquake on my brain’, but is a worthy start proper to the album and whets your appetite for what’s to come. ‘Butterfly’ is all screaming guitars and swirling keyboards reminiscent of Mk3 Deep Purple with a catchy chorus and great guitar solo. ‘Out Of Luck’ is a more bluesy affair with the keyboards again having a prominent role.
The band have produced a rather psychedelic video for ‘Already Left’ a melodic break up song with complex themes and imagery and is an ideal single that has been stuck in my head for the last few days. ‘Right Reasons’ sees bassist George Kasapidis taking lead vocal duties on a smooth ballad again about breaking up with someone. ‘Touch The Clouds’ picks up the pace again is a lively affair with a good groove and a very definite Jimi Hendrix feel. ‘Turn Into Black’ is another emotional slower song again sung by bassist George and is nicely structured with the keyboards to the fore intertwined with some great guitar work. ‘Loosen Up’ is similar in feel to the title track and once again showcases Argyro’s vocal abilities and the guitar playing of Panos Leontaritis. Final track ‘Hold On’, the longest on the album, is very Zeppelin-esque moving between haunting balladry and rock bombast and finishes off the record on a real high.
The Album is a promising start for this Greek band, who remind me of The Damn Truth or Blues Pills but with more grit, and although I’m not entirely sold on their name, I love this record and hopefully it will lead to bigger and better things for them and I would encourage everyone who likes classic rock to give it a listen.
