Review: Whiskey Myers – Whomp Whack Thunder

The wonderfully titled ‘Whomp Whack Thunder‘ is the seventh studio album from this rocking country outfit from Texas.
There’s a lot of muscle in the tracks on offer here that you wouldn’t necessarily identify with this style.
Dig deeper than just the music and you find frontman Cody Cannon relating tales of honest living and the highs and lows that it can bring. Yes, it’s bar time music, but there’s also more on offer here.
‘Time Bomb‘ gets things off to a fine start, driving in parts and holding back in others, it’s the starter before the main course.
‘Tailspin‘ is the track that has been getting a lot of airplay and it’s easy to see why. It’s a foot tapper with the easy female backing vocals adorning the chorus.
‘I Got To Move‘ is an open song driven by the melody vocal line.
How ironic that ‘Rowdy Days‘ is a melancholy look back at the past. When you get to a certain age, reminiscing comes naturally. This tune is sitting on a porch with a whisky and wondering what happened to days gone by.
And that’s another of this band’s strengths. The ability to be familiar, but not make you feel as though you have actually heard it before.
‘Midnight Woman‘ sees Cannon channelling his inner macho as he spits forth tales of a woman that’ll chew you up and spit you out. Let’s be honest, in the bars down in Texas, we all secretly hope there’s at least one in every joint.
Clutter in a song sometimes complicated matters. Listening to ‘Break These Chains‘ is the opposite. The vocal line is a call and response to the guitar. It swings and rolls.
‘Born To Do‘ is possibly the most countrified tune on offer here.
‘Rock N Roll‘ might conjure up cock strutting and bottle draining, but, surprise, surprise, it isn’t. More a whistful look at a life and what it means to a rock n roller.
You need a good stomper and ‘Ramblin’ Jones‘ ticks that box.
The bar has to close sometime unfortunately and ‘Monsters‘ is the sound of the empty and broken glasses being gathered and swept up, the bar stools being turned over, the towels being put over the taps and the lights being turned off.
This album is raw and real. Seven in and these guys are turning their style into an art form.
Will ‘Whomp Whack Thunder‘ change your life?
No, but it will make it seem a whole brighter, put a smile on your face and in places make you think.
And if you don’t want to get that deep, pour yourself a large bourbon and put yourself virtually in that Texas bar and enjoy.
