Review: Connor Selby – The Truth Comes Out Eventually UK Tour

A new venue for me although I have fond memories of the complex being built between 2005 and 2008 as I my wife would pick me up outside for our onward journey to watch Arsenal.

Tonight was the official launch of Connor Selby’s new album, ‘The Truth Comes Out Eventually‘. An album that maintains the high standards he has consistently achieved, nothing new, but hey if it ain’t broken why fix it.

The Truth Comes Out Eventually‘ is Connor’s third album in seven years. He has always stressed that all of the songs he writes are inspired by things he has experienced. The majority being, it seems, bad experiences which is always the preferred source for a blues lyric. He is a true master of slow blues and is never in a rush to raise the tempo. When he does, however, he has an incredible band to take us all along for the ride.

I know Connor was looking forward to this show for a number of reasons, one being that this was the first UK show ever that he has been joined by a horn section, allowing him to express the beauty of the new album fully.

I have been endorsing the extremely talented Connor Selby since I first saw him in 2019. I have seen him many times and that talent continues to evolve. Connor has a first class band in Stevie Watts (Keyboards), Sonny Winslow (Bass) and I must apologise for not catching the names of Connor‘s drummer on the night or the excellent horn section.

New single ‘Amelia‘ is a song that Connor wrote during his teenage years, not so long ago mind, and rather than being blues in style it puts me in mind of Nick Drake and folky. It was a real treat tonight as Connor played it solo on acoustic guitar, such a good song and highlighting the young man’s ability to write a love song that goes straight to the heart.

Connor played everything off the new album and I applaud his bravery and confidence for that. The audience demanded more after Connor closed the set with ‘That’s Alright‘ from his debut album ‘Made Up My Mind‘ and he returned to play us out with another beautifully executed acoustic number, ‘Songbird‘ before bringing the band back for one last number, ‘Someone‘.

A great set from Connor and I believe we were privileged to witness the horns as they were only accompanying the band for the one night.
