Review: Hartmann – Twenty Times Colder

The good thing about this job, is that most of the time, the bands I get to review, I have never heard of before. It opens my eyes to other styles of rock music, that otherwise I’d be oblivious to.

I spend a lot of time in Germany and have heard of the name, Hartmann. But I’ve never wrapped my ears around his music. 

Until now.

His biography is far too big to try and concisely convey here, but Hartmann have been a going concern since 2004.

I’m going to cut to the chase.

If you like David Coverdale, around the ‘Slide It In‘ era, then you’ll probably like Oliver Hartmann’s voice. He exudes that vocal silkiness and blues tinged rock styling that DC used to be known for.

Don’t expect all the music to be Whitesnake part two though. It’s definitely classic melodic rock with modern touches here and there.

Stand out tracks are the title track which sports a delicious upbeat chorus. 

‘No One But You‘ stomps along in a groove you could fit a truck in, the bluesy slightly ‘Snake, ‘Alone‘, where Hartmann proves his worth as more than a mere rock guitarist. Not that his full on fretwork leaves anything to be desired either!

The eastern feel and rhythm of ‘Just Fly‘ works really well. ‘Heart Over Mind‘ has a staccato guitar timing, but the chorus doesn’t quite hit the mark.

The band love a ballad with four on offer here.

The production is smooth and lets the polished performances of all the musicians shine. 

If there’s one criticism to be made, it’s there aren’t enough up tempo songs, ‘Valentines Day‘ apart.

Time to look into Hartmann’s back catalogue?

This is definitely a good place to start.
