Review: Brent Cobb & The Fixins – Ain’t Rocked In A While

Ol’ Buddy Records (July 11th 2025)

Reviewer – Chris O’Connor

With ‘Ain’t Rocked in a While’, Brent Cobb veers off the well-worn gravel road of Americana into a thunderous, soul-slicked Southern rock detour – one that feels less like a diversion and more like a long-overdue homecoming. Together with his powerhouse backing band, The Fixin’s – Len Clark (drums), Matt McDaniel (guitar), and Josh Williams (bass) – Cobb plunges headfirst into the loud, loose, and gloriously lived-in world of vintage rock ’n’ roll, capturing the grit and groove of the ‘70s with startling authenticity.

Recorded live to tape, the album thrums with raw immediacy and an unfiltered energy that’s impossible to fake. You can hear the amps hum, the sweat drip, and the unmistakable joy of a band playing loud and free. This is not the Brent Cobb of dusky front porch ballads and slow-burning country introspection; this is Cobb channelling Skynyrd, Raging Slab, ZZ Top, and The Black Crowes, wielding Southern rock like a preacher with a Gibson and a sermon in his throat.

The record opens with ‘Beyond Measure’, a short, soulful piano piece delivered on a creaky pianola – fragile, haunted, and inviting. It acts as a moody overture before the title track kicks in like a mule. ‘Ain’t Rocked in a While’ erupts with blistering guitar and ragged vocals that conjure the spirit of early Raging Slab, pulsing with feral urgency. The distortion on Cobb’s voice only amplifies the sense of being thrust into a smoky bar somewhere deep in the Bible Belt, where the beer’s cheap and the music is loud enough to raise the dead.

From there, the album doesn’t let up. ‘Bad Feelin’ ’ slinks along with a wah-soaked funk reminiscent of vintage Curtis Mayfield meets Little Feat, while ‘Do It All the Time’ is a foot-stomping, riff-heavy celebration of excess and abandon – a gloriously Skynyrd-esque anthem that begs to be played from a muscle car stereo with the windows down.

Even when the tempo drops, the swagger remains. ‘Even If It’s Broke’ shuffles along with a lazy blues strut, full of low-slung charm, while ‘In Our Hands’ offers a more pastoral interlude – warm, wistful, and evocative of the Grateful Dead at their most countrified. Cobb’s vocal delivery here is all restraint and heart, showing he hasn’t abandoned his roots so much as re-potted them in louder soil.

The albums back half continues to dazzle, – ‘Powerman’ is a fuzzed-out, swaggering behemoth, all distorted vocals and swampy groove – it’s ZZ Top in their dirtiest denim. ‘Take Yer Meds’ is another standout, a slithering, serpentine rocker that oozes attitude and Southern-fried cool. The track walks the line between menace and mischief, and it’s among the best Cobb has ever recorded.

‘Til Dawn’ shifts the mood once more, a tender, drifting number that wouldn’t sound out of place on an early America record. It’s all sunset hues and gentle harmonies – a needed breath before the curtain falls. The album closes with ‘Beyond Measure [Fixins]’, a brief, grungy coda that sounds like Pearl Jam jamming in Macon, Georgia. It leaves you wanting more – an intentional choice, perhaps, for a record that never overstays its welcome.

‘Ain’t Rocked in a While’ doesn’t just pay tribute to Southern rock – it lives and breathes it. This is Brent Cobb playing loud, loose, and liberated, surrounded by a band who sound like they were born to do exactly this. While fans of his earlier, more introspective country records may be surprised by the shift in tone, they shouldn’t be discouraged. Beneath the fuzz pedals and bar-band bombast lies the same soulful songwriter, now backed by a roar instead of a whisper.

It’s not a reinvention – it’s a revelation. Highly recommended for fans of Southern rock, classic guitar-driven grooves, and anyone craving an album with heart, grit, and a whole lot of soul. Brent Cobb and The Fixin’s haven’t just rocked in a while – they’ve reminded us why it matters. Hell Yeah!
