Review: Winterland – Life’s What You Make It

Review: Winterland – Life’s What You Make It

Winterland / Rock Company (June 6th, 2025)

Reviewer – Chris O’Connor

Winterland’s self‑released ’Life’s What You Make It’ feels less like a studio obligation and more like time spent in a rehearsal room with old friends who still believe in the alchemy of melody, groove and good stories. Vocalist Stephan Hugo, guitarist Markus Pfeffer (of Barnabas Sky), bassist Bernd Schreiber and drummer Thomas Rieder have pooled decades of experience, yet the record brims with first‑album enthusiasm—proof that camaraderie can be the strongest producer in the room.

The curtain rises with ‘I Want Out’, a brisk, hook‑laden invitation that plants its flag squarely in melodic‑rock territory. Its spring‑heeled chorus segues neatly into the lithe funk of ‘I Don’t Know’, where Schreiber’s fretless bass struts to the front and refuses to sit down. That rhythmic confidence fuels ‘Reach For The Sky’, a breathless rocker whose tasteful lead‑breaks underscore lyrics about staying singular in an increasingly copy‑and‑paste world.

The title track slows the heartbeat to a mid‑tempo throb, balancing Euro‑metal muscle with radio‑ready gloss, while ‘Follow Me’ turns a wry eye on social‑media Pied Pipers, propelled by riffs that nod to classic Helloween and Gamma Ray. Perhaps the record’s most intriguing experiment is ‘Strength In Numbers’ where the quartet channel their inner Dan Reed Network, marrying clipped funk guitar to a deliberate, almost hypnotic pulse.

If you crave a soar‑away chorus, plant the stylus on ‘Personality’ or ‘Run Away‘, both delivered at a head‑down gallop with Hugo in full flight. For atmosphere, ‘After The Storm’ pairs a moody verse with a sunburst refrain, and ‘Missing’ stalks the shadows with Ghost‑like menace, Pfeffer’s searing lines dancing over Schreiber’s pulsing low‑end.

Two closing covers divide opinion. Stripped to piano and flute, ‘Through The Barricades’ (Spandau Ballet) is elegant, if not essential, while the elastic, riff‑spiked ‘Everything Counts’ (Depeche Mode) is spirited but unlikely to dethrone the original. A bonus disc adds still more ’80s tributes—fun curios, yet they slightly dilute the focused identity Winterland carve with their own material.

Production throughout is warm and punchy, capturing the snap of Rieder’s snare and the crystalline harmonies without sanding off the band’s live‑room energy. ‘Life’s What You Make It‘ may not be flawless—an all‑original track list would have tightened its punch—but it crackles with sincerity, craftsmanship and a palpable sense of joy. On this evidence, Winterland’s next chapter could turn very good into truly great.
