Review: Tragik – Crescendo
Tragik (May 28th, 2025)
Reviewer: Chris O’Connor
With their 13th studio outing,’Crescendo‘, Melodic Hard Rock stalwarts Tragik deliver a powerhouse album that not only cements their legacy but also shows they’ve lost none of their edge, flair, or passion. As ever, the band – Phil Vincent (vocals, rhythm guitars, keyboards), Vince O’Regan (lead guitars), Damian D’Ercole (bass), and Dirk Phillips (drums)—proves that experience and creativity can grow in tandem.
The album opens explosively with ‘Phoenix Rising’, a blazing, melodic-yet-heavy track that sets the tone brilliantly, marrying searing guitar lines with a soaring chorus. ‘Givin’ It All Away’ is a bold and unexpected BTO cover, leans into a Thin Lizzy-style swagger that works surprisingly well. From there, ‘Ungrateful’ ups the intensity with modern melodic heaviness, driven by a chunky, head-nodding riff, and a cool chorus.
‘Beyond The Moonlight’ is a standout, evoking classic Boston or even Donnie Iris with its layered harmonies and pristine production. Tracks like ‘It All Comes Down To This’ and ‘Scoop’ showcase Tragik’s knack for balancing crunching guitars with melodic sensibilities –‘Scoop’ especially intrigues with a haunting intro and an almost nostalgic vibe. What the hell do I know that programmed keyboard from? It’s so familiar.
‘Living’ slows things down with a loose, bluesy groove that swings with confidence and features a blistering lead guitar break, while ‘Killbox’ brings in a gritty Cheap Trick influence. ‘Burn It Down’ charges forward with a modern metal aesthetic reminiscent of Judas Priest at their most ferocious, or even Halford at his solo best.
On ‘Human’, Tragik delivers the album’s emotional core—a sweeping piano-based ballad that recalls the emotive stylings of Robby Valentine. ‘All I Have Is You’ brings things back to full throttle with a riff-driven rocker, while ‘Judas’ closes things with another slab of modern melodic hard rock, full of attitude and energy, again tipping its hat to Cheap Trick.
‘Crescendo‘ is aptly named—it’s a record that builds on everything Tragik has done before while still feeling fresh, vital, and full of intent. For long-time fans and newcomers alike, this is essential listening from a band still very much at the top of their game. Phil Vincent and his crew should be very proud of what they have created, it really is a mature and quality album, that is absolutely deserving of your time and attention.
