Review: Dan Byrne, Little Caesar, Tyketto

Rock City, Nottingham, September 14th, 2024

Reviewer / Photographer: Dan Mann

This was the second three band rock gig at Rock City, two days running, which somewhat contradicts a comment I saw on Rock City’s Facebook page which suggested they don’t do rock gigs!

First up we had singer Dan Byrne and his backing band. As per the previous evening, there was a decent sized crowd for the opener, a crowd that enjoyed what they heard. Dan does a fine job on vocals, my only wish is he had a bit more oomph behind his voice, but that’s me, who can’t sing, being picky!

Setlist:

Hard to Breathe

Control

Hate Me

Easier

Wide Awake

Like Animals

Death of Me

Second band of the evening was a band who I have managed to continually miss seeing over the years. Finally that was rectified as Little Caesar took to the stage and delivered their brand of rock. Was it all a let down in the end? Good grief no! Ron Young & Co delivered the goods by the lorry load. Hearing certain songs ignited memories of days gone by, the crowd lapping it up and singing along. Yep, I’m one happy camper, with another band ticked off the list.

Setlist:

Piece of the Action

Rock-n-Roll State of Mind

American Dream

21 Again

Hard Times

Wrong Side of the Tracks

Rum and Coke

Chain of Fools

In Your Arms / I Wish It Would Rain

Cajun Panther

Real Rock Drive

Down to the Wire

Mama Tried

Drive It Home

And so to the last band of the night. I have lost count how many times I’ve seen Tyketto over the last 30 odd  years, I ‘blame’ my better half for enlightening me all those years ago. When you talk about not only great frontmen, but superb vocalists too, Danny Vaughn‘s name rises to the top. Whilst some singer’s voices are falling by the wayside, this is not the case with Mr. Vaughn. With a band that are hardly run of the mill, things are only ever going to superb. Ged Rylands took to the guitar initially, a welcome change from him hiding behind his keyboards, guitarist Harry Scott Elliott throwing the expected shapes, whilst the engine room, and what an engine room it is, consisting of Chris Childs on bass and Johnny Dee on drums, laid down a rock solid foundation to to a setlist that I’m guessing the majority of the crowd sang every word of!

Setlist:

Nothing but Love

Reach

Wings

Tearing Down the Sky

Dig in Deep

Rescue Me

Circle the Wagons

Catch My Fall

Kick Like a Mule

Seasons

The Run

Only You Can Rock Me

Standing Alone

The Last Sunset

Forever Young
