Review: Troy Redfern – Invocation
Red7 Records (May 17th 2024)
Reviewer: Dan Mann
Okay, another case of laying my cards on the table. I’m a Troy Redfern fan, have been for a few years now. Why? Well it’s simple really, Troy takes slide guitar playing and basically turns it on it’s head and hangs a pair of balls off the neck! Plus he’s an incredibly nice chap to boot!
There is nothing old fashioned about Troy’s music, no standing there calmly running a glass slide up and down the strings and singing about stray dogs etc. Troy’s playing is powerful and fierce. His songs, heartfelt and meaningful, they command attention.
Observing Troy’s evolution from one album to the next is fascinating. His album ‘Invocation’ exudes maturity; it’s not just playfulness. The raw emotion is palpable, pulling you into its depth.
I’ve played ‘Invocation‘ a hell of a lot since the promo hit my inbox. I do a lot of my listening whilst in my office, either photo editing or updating this here website. I listen using a decent pair of cans, coupled with a DAC/headphone amp. Why am I telling you this? Well, when you get music such as that you find on ‘Invocation‘, listening using good equipment lets you experience the fullness of an album’s production. Dave Marks has once again done a superb job on the production side, as it delivers a powerful sound, yet also has been allowed to breath.
What’s ‘annoying’ is the fact Troy is also one hell of a graphic artist, I’m looking forward to getting my limited edition original artwork, that was part of Troy’s Crowdfunding for ‘Invocation‘, up on the wall. Some people have far too much talent ha ha.
All that remains to be said is, one should not presume to understand the sound of Troy Redfern’s music without having listened to it, as he has carved out a unique niche for himself.
