Review: The Damn Truth, Glenn Hughes

Rock City, Nottingham Oct 15th 2023

Reviewer / Photographer: Dan Mann

Kicking off proceedings were a band I’ve been wanting to see for a while, just not had chance until now, and that of course was The Damn Truth. These Canadian rockers are becoming regular visitors to Blighty, they’re another band that British audiences have taken to heart, and it’s pretty obvious why. The band are no shrinking violets, let by the very charismatic Lee-La Baum, The Damn Truth very quickly had the packed crowd (no sparce crowd for this support act) eating out of their hands as they entertained us with such enthusiasm, it would have taken a stony face not to get caught up in the music!

I saw/photographed Glenn Hughes earlier this year at a very wet Maid Of Stone festival in Kent, so it was an altogether much more pleasurable experience to be both in the dry and a damn sight closer to the stage. Mr Hughes has got a stellar line-up of chums around him, be it keyboard wizard Bob Fridzema, guitarist extraordinaire Søren Andersen and the powerhouse that is Ash Sheehan, and boy do they deliver the goods. Glenn was certainly on top form, I’d say the best I’ve heard him in a while, and he was clearly enjoying the experience, he was not just going through the motions, these songs mean too much to him. Again the packed crowd lapped up every note as ‘Burn’ was given a proper celebration. Still hard to fathom that the album’s 50 years old! The songs still sound as fresh as ever.

A fantastic evening of live music.
