‘Darkwood‘ is the debut album by The Blue Lena, a new UK band influenced by Southern, Country, and Blues Rock. Released on 18th November, 2023 on Severnlands Records, just in time for the band’s performances at Winterstorm and Planet Rockstock. The album features 12 irresistibly catchy and hook-laden songs written by vocalist Peter Yeomans and guitarist Nick Singleton, with lyrics drawn from their own lives and experiences. ‘Darkwood‘ is named after the studio in the woods, where the songs were first played to an audience at an impromptu acoustic gig.
The band say, “Imagine if Free were a Southern Rock band, and Fleetwood Mac were singing harmonies for them. Imagine if Bruce Springsteen was British and had written those infections songs of life, love and loss, but in small town England. Now, imagine those songs being performed with soul and passion by an exciting 7 piece rock band – all soulful vocals, bluesy guitars, Hammond organ, and rock ’n’ roll grooves!”
Peter and Nick both have previous live/touring experience and album credits between them from previous bands. Peter having been the lead singer of High Treason since 2012, releasing 2 albums with them on the 3M label, one of which featured collaborations with Ben Matthews of UK rockers Thunder. Nick’s previous known bands include The Firebyrds which featured a couple of future Quireboys members and The Tattooed Love Boys, with whom he toured and played on their second album which was released on Music For Nations. More recently, Nick formed NWOCR band 3Sixty, with whom he wrote and recorded the #truestories album.
Peter and Nick began writing and recording the songs for the album during the recent lockdown periods, and pulled together a cast of characters from the trusted musicians they have played with before to form The Blue Lena.
