Review: Bonafide – Denim Devils

It has to be said that although there has been a massive quantity of Rock bands erupting out of the Scandinavian scene over the last few years, there have been very very few like Bonafide, which is great as there are a great number of bands that sound very similar.
Denim Devils is the follow up to 2013’s acclaimed and very well received Bombo album, and for me it’s continuing the evolution of the band, maybe they are no longer the all out in your face style of 2009’s  ‘Something’s Dripping’ but the band are now creating songs that have a little bit more to them, okay there’s still elements of an AC/DC influence every now and then, but there are some damn fine tunes.
The band is the brainchild of the multi-talented Pontus Snibb, who with Bonafide is Vocalist, Guitarist, Songwriter and Producer, this is clearly a project that Pontus cares deeply about and puts one hell of a lot of effort into, writing all twelve tracks, of which there is plenty of variation, but the common denominator is that it’s all Rock & Roll, bluesy, ballsy rock ‘n’ roll.
It is to the bands great credit that they can bring many different faces to the table and hold onto an underlying style that keeps everything motoring along, and there are some really cracking songs on this album, the likes of ‘One Kiss‘ which is without doubt going to be a singalong live with a very refreshing powerful and almost poppy sound to it, then there’s ‘Who Am I To Judge‘ another track in a different style, down low bluesy and funky riff running right through the middle of it, sounding great, the vocals match everything perfectly and the wonderful ‘Missing You‘ which may just be the highlight of the album is a truly beautiful song where you can almost feel the emotion dripping out of it, it’s a melting pot of Rock and Blues with some rather excellent guitar work all over it, and at the same time it’s nearly a Rock Ballad in placed, wonderful song. That’s how the album unwinds, there’s styles changing effortlessly, but always remaining in the Hard Rock spectrum with different pieces just adding value to the overall work.
The guys have created another terrific album here, Denim Devils may be a little bit understated and if you don’t know Bonafide then get on board, their journey is definitely one that’s worth following. Mr. Snibb is indeed one talented guy, but he is more than ably supported by Anders Rosell (Guitar), Martin Ekelund (Bass) and Niklas Matsson (Drums) who all form a tight knit unit and the end result is class.
There are interesting tracks to be found all over this one, and it’s not filler, it’s just different somehow it all blends perfectly and everything flows so well, you can take other tracks like ‘50/50‘ and ‘Hold Down The Fort‘, which definitely harks back to a major influence, and once again there’s no drop in quality, the material on this album will sound so good live, and some tracks will be enhanced by a little additional volume and mayhem. ‘The Game‘ and ‘This One’s For You‘ close the album out really nicely on a slab of Rock that could have another four or five songs and still not be overlong, at this point Bonafide should be getting more attention than they seem to be getting, hopefully this album will help to spread the word, if you like it shout from the rooftops.
