Hannah Wicklund has released her new single ‘The Pier’, the latest song to be taken from her critically acclaimed new album ‘War On Women; Calling All Good Men‘ (review here).
The album is available to purchase now on CD, vinyl and digital download via Strawberry Moon Records here. The album sees Hannah putting the power back into the hands of artists and music fans, while the corporate streaming giants are receiving one song in track list order over the course of one year, following a ritualistic release pattern sharing new music on each full moon.
New single ‘The Pier’ is a brooding groovy blues rocker which Hannah says is, “a song for anyone who has ever lost someone they loved to the darkness.” Through Hannah’s entrancing guitar playing and wide-reaching reverberated vocals, she reflects on the fracturing of her previous relationship, while presenting a song offering strength to those surrounded by destructive forces.
‘War On Women; Calling All Good Men‘features further songs which expand on this relationship’s unravelling. On the ferocious ‘Whistle To Blow’, she rails against the man who “shaved his head like Britney Spears”, while ‘The Token’ is a spine-tingling piano ballad which doesn’t pull its punches on the imbalance and abuse at the hands of him and his world. The bare strummed ‘Stockholm’ is a similarly frank depiction of a partnership that had strayed into strange territory – “I left Tennessee with the man of my dreams,” Hannah sings, “then I woke up to you”.
The new album is a monster of a record that’s both beauty and the beast. Its 13 sublime, scorching songs are at once a warning and a winner’s lap, conjured from hell and from the heart.
It’s a rollercoaster ride that ratchets up the drama, shakes with rage and basks in beauty as it shimmies through rock, soul, blues, folk, gospel and pop. It takes in a tale of heartbreak in strange circumstances, lays bare the obstacles Hannah overcame to take back control of her career, and offers hope for the future. It is Hannah’s first album since breaking free from an industry which conspired to keep her quiet.
‘War On Women; Calling All Good Men‘ follows 2024’s widely-acclaimed ‘The Pier’ – named Rolling Stone Brazil’s #1 Rock Album of the Year among a wealth of further praise. It should have sent Hannah supernova, instead, it marked a years-long battle to retain her rights.
Written, recorded and self-produced on a barely-there budget in the latter half of last year, funded completely by her paintings and artwork, ‘War On Women; Calling All Good Men‘ is an antidote to lean-back listening. Raw, instinctive and fuelled by passion and a sense of right and wrong, its songs are a mix of live takes and well-built studio tracks, captured mostly by engineer Devin Vaughan in Charleston, who also plays drums on the record.
In tandem with the new single releases, Hannah has developed The Strawberry Moon Tribune, a beautiful independent arts and culture magazine of which she is Editor-In-Chief. The Strawberry Moon Tribune follows a similar release pattern. Each publication follows the themes of a relating single on the album, as she brings together a host of creatives and experts in the field to contribute to its pages. The Strawberry Moon Tribune is available globally wherever books are sold via IngramSpark as well as available as a digital version.
‘War On Women; Calling All Good Men‘ will be available to purchase at all forthcoming Hannah Wicklund shows. Following her recent headline tour of the UK, Hannah starts extensive touring across North America this week running until the end of the year.
The shows begin with a 10-date co-headline tour with Turning Jane starting on Wednesday (October 28th) at The Southgate House Revival in Newport. Hannah will then start her 12-date ‘Red Gorilla’ Headline Tour from November 18th.
Regarding her touring Hannah says, “My new record was wildly freeing to write and release, but to be out on the open road and back on the Rock N Roll stage feels strangely grounding. There’s nowhere else I’m meant to be right now.”
