Review: Laurence Jones – On My Own

Review: Laurence Jones – On My Own

Laurence Jones is an award winning and critically acclaimed blues rock artist from Liverpool, seeking creative independence he has set-up his own record label and this record is the first release. It is an intimate all acoustic record that explores his recent health struggles and after 15 years in the business takes him back to his roots where it all began.

First track ‘One Life‘ starts with a slide guitar riff and a rhythm that will very quickly have you tapping your foot, and as the title suggests tells you that you only get one life and to make the most it. Following a similar theme, ‘Life I Made‘ has a more upbeat rhythm to it and says that whatever mistakes you make in life are down to you and it’s up to you to learn from them and move on.

Title track ‘On My Own‘ was the lead single from the album and with a more traditional blues riff is a snapshot of where he is in his life at the moment, just him and his guitar doing his music on his own. ‘Get Back Up‘ has the guitar playing to the fore coupled with an almost chanted vocal and use of a megaphone. ‘Ain’t Coming Back No More‘ is another foot stomper on a more generic theme of I’m fed up with this relationship and don’t be sad when you don’t see me again.

Change My Ways‘ seems to follow directly on from ‘Ain’t Coming Back No More‘, in that once he does leave town, he’s going to make changes that will hopefully improve his lot in life. ‘I Gave My Life To You‘ is slower paced, questioning what more could he have done in a relationship that’s seemed to have run its course. ‘I’m Giving Up‘ moves back to more standard 12-bar blues with some great finger picking in a song that follows the title.

We are back into full on rocker mode with ‘Do You Feel The Same‘ is probably the most upbeat song on the album in terms of tempo and although quite wordy trots along at a good pace. ‘Middle Of The Night‘ drops the tempo right down, and is an anthem to insomniacs. Final track ‘Beautiful‘ is a sunny upbeat love song which finishes the album on a hopeful note.

Everything you hear on the album has been done by Laurence Jones and he also produced it with the help of Wayne Proctor owner of The House Of Tone Mix Suite in Nottingham, and he has given us an album of blues as it should be stripped back and heartfelt.
