Review: Bad Wolves – Die About It (Deluxe Edition)

‘Die About It‘ was the fourth album by Bad Wolves, the Californian heavy metal band managed by Zoltan Bathory (Five Finger Death Punch) released in 2023. This release is the Deluxe version which adds an extra 10 tracks to the 13 of the original release and is a mixture of tracks that didn’t make the original album, reinterpretations of existing tracks plus a couple of live cuts.
I have always felt that Deluxe issues of albums are directed at hardcore fans who already own the original and must have the extra tracks of the new version, but can also be seen as a bit of a cash in, so is this one worth it? Here’s a run through of the whole caboodle.
Bad Wolves aren’t afraid to mix it up which leads to a varied album, ‘Intro‘ is just that, acoustic guitar and soft vocals that lead into first track proper Bad Friend which explodes into life with a crunching guitar riff and the odd growl as the song develops into a heavy track with a great chorus. The title track comes next, ‘Die About It‘ has a nu-metal feel, starting with a rap vocal that then moves into growls as the song builds and then a clean vocal for the chorus, and carries on in this vein throughout the song. The full-on pace continues with ‘Savior‘ a song that thunders along with the drums really coming to the fore. ‘Hungry For Life‘ is the first slower paced song dealing with mortality and has real impact in its lyrics.
The storytelling continues with ‘Legends Never Die‘ a track which could easily be a film theme song. ‘NDA‘ is a surprising track being almost poppy, with saxophone leading into the guitar solo, the lyrics really require some thought and just when you feel it’s coming to a close you get a minute’s worth of saxophone to finish. The next 3 tracks ‘Move On‘, ‘Masquerade’ and ‘Say It Again‘ are all fairly similar, following the same path as Savior with an early noughties rock vibe of loud, quiet, loud, a guitar solo and driven along by a steady rhythm. ‘It’s You (2 Months)‘ gives a bit of a break from the onslaught, an acoustic guitar led ballad featuring a duet with singer KILLBOY which has good variation in pace which means it fits in well to the overall feel of the album. With ‘Turn It Down‘ it’s business as usual with a great bit of shredding at its core. Final track ‘Set You On Fire‘ is another slower paced song with interestingly built vocals that closes things off nicely.
The First Track of the additional material ‘Hungry For Life (feat. Chris Daughtry)‘ isn’t a new song having been released as a single last year, and apart from adding a bit more depth to the vocal follows the original. Next comes ‘Hang On To Thunder‘ another collaboration this time with Australian Pop Punksters Stand Atlantic which produces a softer track similar to ‘It’s You‘ on the original album with the female vocal. ‘Made For The Misery‘ is another hard-hitting track in the vein of the majority of the original album mixing vocal styles over a heavy beat tinged with electronica. ‘Home‘ starts quietly before bursting into life with an explosion of guitars and drums and continues with dynamic shifts of quiet and loud passages.
‘Because Of You‘ is more of the same and reminds me of BFMV with crunching guitars, pummeling drums and hooky chorus. ‘Say It Again (feat. The Rasmus)‘ does add an interesting additional vocal element to the original so makes a worthy inclusion here. The anthemic nature of ‘Legends Never Die‘ make it an ideal candidate for the Orchestral makeover and is quite beautiful in this form with piano and choir. The additional material concludes with two live tracks, Bad Friend which has the extra ferocity you expect in a live setting and ‘Legends Never Die‘ which shows that live Bad Wolves can really deliver the goods.
Overall ‘Die About It’ was a solid album when released which needed a few plays to really appreciate it and this Deluxe edition adds some interesting additional tracks which make it a worthwhile purchase (or stream) for members of the Wolfpack or anyone who doesn’t have the original.
