Review: When Rivers Meet – Addicted To You
Road Records (May 23rd, 2025)

In a world where musical authenticity can feel increasingly rare, ‘Addicted To You’, the fourth studio album from British blues rock duo When Rivers Meet, is a resounding reminder that soul, substance, and sophistication still reign supreme. Independently created—without label, manager, or industry safety net—this album is a bold testament to the creative power and artistic freedom of husband-and-wife duo Aaron and Grace Bond, joined by a formidable supporting cast of musicians.
From the opening notes to the final triumphant crescendo, ‘Addicted To You’ delivers a masterclass in genre-blending finesse. While firmly rooted in blues rock, the album fearlessly explores new sonic territories. It is as emotionally raw as it is musically refined, rich in heartfelt performances and inventive arrangements.
The title track is a standout—imbued with irresistible pop sensibility and anchored by a riff that is as cool as it is infectious. Meanwhile, ‘Break Free’ grooves with a vibrant funk, featuring Aaron’s powerhouse vocals and Grace’s ever-expressive violin. ‘Still Standing’ offers a gritty, swaggering riff and a scorching vocal performance from Grace that commands attention.
The more delicate ‘Coming Up For Air’ showcases the duo’s remarkable vocal chemistry. Their voices intertwine beautifully over atmospheric guitar and piano, creating a moment of aching intimacy. Tracks like ‘Never Change’ lean into subtle funk and a touch of Cajun blues, while ‘Preacher’ bursts with danceable, joyous energy reminiscent of Cry of Love.
The album’s second half continues to dazzle: ‘Tree of Life’ channels gospel warmth and emotional depth, building from gentle picking to a breathtaking climax. ‘Soft White Sand’ shuffles along with a dirty blues swagger, calling to mind vintage Led Zeppelin, while ‘Don’t Wanna Fight’ blends folk-rock grace with thunderous peaks—a sonic tapestry that evokes both Fairport Convention and the mystical side of Zeppelin. Grace’s vocals here are especially spellbinding, delicate yet powerful.
‘Just Let Them’ offers yet another highlight, a gentle, lilting ballad that swells into something celestial, enriched by gospel harmonies and shimmering instrumentation. The closing track, ‘When Rivers Meet’ is a love letter to their fans—affectionately known as “The Rapids”. It begins with understated bluesy slide guitar before erupting into a colossal chorus destined to bring audiences to their feet.
Produced and mixed with immaculate care by multi-instrumentalist Adam Bowers, and featuring dynamic contributions from James Fox (keyboards, guitars/drums), and an ensemble of gifted backing vocalists, ‘Addicted To You’ is an album brimming with passion, precision, and purpose.
Ten years into their career, When Rivers Meet are not just evolving—they’re transcending boundaries. From funk-laced grooves to anthemic rock, from gospel-laden ballads to raw blues grit, this is music that pulses with life. ‘Addicted To You’ is nothing short of a triumph—an album that deserves to be heard, felt, and celebrated. It is electrifying, unforgettable, and utterly essential.
