Review: Phil Vincent – Backstabber
Rock Company (February 26th, 2025)
Reviewer: Chris O’Connor
Rhode Island’s own Phil Vincent returns with ‘Backstabber’, a dynamic and powerful addition to his extensive solo discography. A true multi-instrumentalist, Vincent handles vocals, rhythm and acoustic guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums, while lead guitar duties are expertly delivered by Vince O’Regan. The album is self-produced, with mastering by the renowned Jacob Hansen—whose impressive credits include Amaranthe, Pretty Maids, Epica, Primal Fear, and Evergrey.
The album opens with ‘Rest In Peace’, a haunting church organ sounding introduction that seamlessly transitions into ‘Do It Right’—a hard-hitting track driven by razor-sharp riffs and a soaring chorus. This is a cover of the Tygers of Pan Tang classic, paying tribute to the late, great John Sykes with fiery guitar work from Mr O’Regan.
‘New Light’ keeps the energy high with a crunching riff and an infectious, anthemic chorus, while ‘Habit’ introduces a pulsing keyboard motif that lays the foundation for Vincent’s commanding guitars and a massive hook. ‘Betrayer’ is particularly striking, featuring a relentless riff and pointed, cutting lyrics that leave a lasting impact.
The album also showcases Vincent’s softer, more emotive side. ‘Miss You Everyday’ is a beautifully crafted power ballad, led by a delicate piano arrangement before building into a sweeping, emotive chorus, enhanced by Vince O’Regan’s exquisite lead work. ‘Nobody’s Fault’ surprises with an almost Thrash Metal like riff in the verses before resolving into an ultra-melodic, soaring refrain.
Another standout ballad, ‘Thanks to You’, opens with a warm acoustic passage, gradually blossoming into an uplifting chorus with a wonderfully expressive guitar solo. On the heavier side, ‘No Idea’ thunders forward with a near-sledgehammer riff and an adrenaline-fueled pace, while ‘Now, You Know’ brings a modern melodic rock feel with hints of post-grunge influence. ‘All for Love’ delivers another fast-paced rocker, seamlessly blending intensity with a silky, infectious chorus.
‘Better Off Alone (Walk Away)’ stands as a hard-rocking gem, boasting a powerful riff and a gripping chorus, before the album closes on an unexpected yet deeply personal note. ‘Theme from A Summer Place’ an instrumental rendition of the classic 1950s film theme, serves as a heartfelt tribute to Phil’s recently departed father—a touching and beautifully executed finale.
In summation, ‘Backstabber’ is yet another testament to Phil Vincent’s remarkable consistency as a songwriter. His ability to fuse muscular, hard-hitting riffs with soaring melodies remains unparalleled, making this album a must-listen for fans of melodic rock. With each release, Vincent reaffirms why his music continues to resonate so strongly, and ‘Backstabber’ is no exception – being an album he should be immensely proud of.
