The Pit Presents ‘Gone with the Wind: The Remarkable Rise And Tragic Fall Of Lynyrd Skynyrd’

“When music is new and fresh and you record it on record, it will always sound new and fresh. It will last forever. And like the old cliché about good wine, it will get better with time. If it wasn’t good music, we wouldn’t be talking about it. They’ve found a way to be a unique band with great music, and people will remember these great songs forever.”

As new addition to its list of programs, The Pit VOD platform presents ‘Gone with the Wind: The Remarkable Rise And Tragic Fall Of Lynyrd Skynyrd‘, a documentary that explores Lynyrd Skynyrd’s rise, fall, and enduring legacy—told through rare footage, exclusive interviews, and the tragic plane crash that changed rock history forever.

How do you describe Lynyrd Skynyrd without calling them rock’s saddest band?

Formed in 1964 as My Backyard, they rose to fame with their 1973 debut (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd), defining Southern Rock with raw talent and the magnetic Ronnie Van Zant.

Tragedy struck in 1977 when a plane crash claimed Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, singer Cassie Gaines, and their road manager—shattering the band’s original lineup.

This documentary traces their journey from humble beginnings to heartbreaking loss, featuring interviews with original members Bob Burns, Ed King, and Artimus Pyle, as well as close friends, journalists, and biographer Mark Ribowsky—supported by rare photos and footage.

Despite tragedy, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987 with Ronnie’s brother Johnny Van Zant at the helm and continues touring today.

The full documentary is available here with a 7-days FREE trial.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is celebrating 40 years of being one of America’s seminal rock groups. Come out and see them on their anniversary tour. All tour dates and tickets are available at their website.
