Review: Zac and The New Men, Oli Brown & The Dead Collective
The Bodega (April 21st 2024)
Reviewer / Photographer: Dan Mann
Alright, let’s address the elephant in the room and return it to the metaphorical zoo. I’m not fond of The Bodega. As a photographer, it’s quite troublesome, and as an attendee, the sound quality and lighting are subpar. Nonetheless, I decided to set aside my usual reservations and attended to see the two bands featured in the night’s line-up.
First up were Zac and The New Men. Having seen and photographed them at Savfest, I anticipated their performance, and they didn’t disappoint. This eager young band has distinctly marked their territory in the modern rock scene. It’s both irksome and impressive how such young talent can shine. Their brief yet refined set captivated the audience. They’re definitely a band to watch.

And now, the headliners. I’ve watched all three members of Oli Brown & The Dead Collective perform numerous times before, sometimes as The Dead Collective, other times with various bands they’ve been part of. Oli Brown, Sam Wood, and Wayne Proctor are well-versed in music. Their collective talent has enabled them to both explore and experiment to a degree. The music of The Dead Collective doesn’t conform to the ‘cookie cutter’ formula that’s currently in vogue.
As musicians capable of crossing into multiple genres, it’s evident in their sound, with the audience thoroughly enjoying the music. It was an accomplished performance, one to be relished.
