Acclaimed American guitarist Geoff Tyson (born in Berkeley, California) releases his first instrumental guitar album on CD, vinyl and digital on Friday 31 July 2020. Distributed by Cargo Records, the album’s available to pre-order from www.geofftyson.com.

Geoff’s story is an interesting one. In 1983, at the age of 13, Geoff studied guitar with Joe Satriani, and refined his skills jamming with high school mates Alex Skolnick, Charlie Hunter, Jude Gold, Joshua Redmond Third Eye Blind’s Kevin Cadogan.  Geoff is one of two students Satriani has said ‘Graduated’ from his lessons (the other being Steve Vai.)  In 1994, Geoff recorded and toured with T-Ride and released an album on Hollywood Records. In 1999 he appeared on Snake River Conspiracy’s debut album (Reprise Records) and toured with Monster Magnet and Queens of the Stone Age. In 2003, he formed Stimulator with singer Susan Hyatt, and in 2005 they signed a record deal with Universal Music. Stimulator toured the world with Duran Duran, The Go-Go’s and featured on the Van’s Warped Tour.

Guitar was my first love,” reflects Geoff. “I first met Joe Satriani when I was 13 and he helped to develop my passion for playing guitar. I soon became one of his favourite students, alongside Alex Skolnick, Steve Vai, Kirk Hammet and Charlie Hunter. “Satriani and I met weekly for about 2 ½ years, and he became my mentor and inspiration, always challenging me to do something unique and personal. It’s a lesson I have applied to all aspects of my musical endeavours. As popular music trends changed, I evolved into a singer-songwriter, recording engineer and  producer. After encouragement from Satriani and fans, I finally decided to record an instrumental guitar album (aka ‘Drinks With Infinity). I knew I had to create something that encompassed my experience and skills.

Since the 2017 release of his ‘What Happens Next‘ album, Satriani , toured his G3 Guitar Extravaganza worldwide to critical acclaim, and then embarked on the Experience Hendrix US tour. Joe Satriani is ready to kick off the new decade with a new album release and world tour. Set for release this spring, ‘Shapeshifting‘ marks the legendary guitarist’s 18th studio album in his nearly 35-year career in music. More details on the new album to come shortly.

As previously announced, ‘The Shapeshifting Tour‘ opens on April 15, 2020 with a 42 date European leg beginning in Germany and winding up with a trio of mid-June shows in Spain with more dates to be announced soon. The set list for the live show will feature tracks from the new Shapeshifting album in addition to many of his classic fan-favorites including ‘Surfing With The Alien‘, ‘Always with Me, Always with You‘ and ‘Flying In A Blue Dream‘. The 2020 touring band features celebrated drummer Kenny Aronoff (Supersonic Blues Machine), bassist Bryan Beller (Aristocrats) and keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte (Thirsty Merc) joining Satriani on guitar.

On January 15, 2020 Satriani will be inducted into the 2020 Metal Hall of Fame by his friend and former guitar student, Steve Vai. The ceremony, hosted by television and radio personality, Eddie Trunk, will take place during a non-profit charity Gala whose proceeds go to bringing free drum therapy services to special needs children at specific health facilities and community centers throughout the United States. Other 2020 Metal Hall of Fame inductees include Steve Vai, Geoff Tate, Don Dokken, Graham Bonnet and Metal Church while previous Inductees include Judas Priest, Motorhead, Ronnie James Dio, Bill Ward, Mikkey Dee, Randy Rhoads, Scorpions, and Doro Pesch, among other hard rock and heavy metal icons. To see the full list of Metal Hall of Fame Inductees, please visit www.thehallofheavymetalhistory.org.

On January 16 JOE and Eddie Trunk will meet up again, this time at LA’s famous Rainbow Bar & Grill on Sunset Blvd for Trunk’s monthly LA Invasion show airing live on SiriusXM 106 Volume channel.  The show will air live from 7-9pm PT and replay Friday from 2-4pm ET and 10-midnight ET.  It will also be available on the SiriusXM app.

In other Satriani music related news, two sets of Satriani music have now been added to streaming platforms. Additional Creations and Bonus Tracks, featuring alternate versions of four songs from his ‘Engines of Creation‘ album along with 12 other various bonus tracks join a newly released deluxe edition of his classic 1987 album, ‘Surfing With The Alien‘ (Deluxe Edition), which arrived late last year featuring new artwork and a bonus disc, ‘Stripped – the Backing Tracks‘. The latter, launched as a limited run for Black Friday’s Record Store Day in November, features the songs from the album with all guitar solos removed. The set also features new artwork with Satriani’s guitar replacing the iconic Silver Surfer on the cover. Said SatrianiSeeing my chrome guitar bursting through a multicolor wormhole seems quite fitting. It’s as if it always belonged there.

Since 1987, Satriani’s platinum, dual Grammy nominated album ‘Surfing With The Alien‘, has established him as a legend in the music world for over 30 years. Satriani explained his decision to make the stripped version, after years of reluctance for such a work, “When I build a track from scratch it’s a kind of musical alchemy, a mixture of voodoo, mojo, blood, sweat, tears, prayers… and a lot of hard work. I cherish them because of this… it’s no wonder I’ve been reluctant to release them (stripped).” Now, he is truly excited about giving this new and exciting versions of his music to the fans, “You can play along with these tracks or just sit back and enjoy the mixes as they are.

For two decades, the guitar virtuoso has traveled the world, playing to sold-out crowds as both a headliner and as founder of the all-star “G3” guitar extravaganza.  Satriani’s studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date and of his many solo albums, two have gone platinum and four others went gold, with 15 Grammy nominations between them.  His side project, Chickenfoot, featuring former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar, former bassist Michael Anthony, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith saw their debut album certified gold and their second studio album debuted at #9.

Review: Joe Satriani – What Happens Next

Sony Music Cmg (January 2018)

Reviewer: David Mark Pearce

Believe it or not, although being a guitarist myself, this is my first review of a guitar instrumental album.

I think it’s good to go in at the very top and start with what he does best. Yes, there’s faster, maybe more technically intricate out there – but none anywhere near as commercially successful as Satch! Why? Well, the guy has technique in spades, but where as others rely almost solely on that alone, Joe brings musicality, skill and melody to his songs. Everyone, from your dyed in the wool shredder to (let’s face it!) your Dad, will be singing along and tapping their feet, or fingers, too. That’s what, in my opinion, makes Satch the best!

To be the best, or the captain of your own ship as it were, it helps if you have first and second mates along for the journey. In this instance, Glenn Hughes and Chad Smith. Satch has been quoted as saying something along the lines of “What would happen if I put this guy with this guy?”. Well, he did it here and it’s a perfect combination! Hughes is more known for being the so called voice of rock, although I’ve never seen him as that – he’s more funk, to me, than out and out rock – but everyone seems to forget just how good a bassist he is. I mean, c’mon, he was in Trapeze and Deep Purple and you’re not in those bands on looks alone! Combine him with Smith and that’s the solid rhythm section taken care of, but it’s one that’s really interesting to listen to as well. Hughes really delivers on what, I believe, is his first instrumental outing!

All in all, what we have here is, I think, Satriani’s strongest album in many a year. I’m intrigued to find out “what happens next” well, after this one, wait – that is this one ….. oh, you know what I mean!

Satriani has invited Dream Theater‘s John Petrucci and the former Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth to join.

World-renowned guitar virtuoso, Joe Satriani, announces the release of his 16th solo album, ‘What Happens Next‘, set for release, January 12, 2018 on Sony/Legacy Recordings. Just a day prior to the album release, Joe Satriani revives his G3 tour entity, inviting Dream Theater’s John Petrucci and Def Leppard lead guitarist, Phil Collen to join him. The G3 tour launches on January 11 in Seattle, WA and continues across the U.S. before winding up on February 25 in Milwaukee, WI. There is a special tour pre-sale promotion giving fans the opportunity to buy concert tickets with the new album as well as VIP packages. Click HERE for more information, pre-sale opportunities and specific market pre-sale and on-sale dates.

The new, instrumentally electrifying album features a power trio of legendary status; Satriani on guitar and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple/Black Country Communion) and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), the latter reuniting with Satriani for the first time since their work in the supergroup ChickenfootSatriani is once again joined by producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser, his frequent collaborator over the last 20 years, on ‘What Happens Next‘. Fraser is well-known for recording/mixing every AC/DC album since 1990’s The Razors Edge along with his classic works with Satriani going back to the release of Crystal Planet in 1998.

These new tracks literally vibrate the soul with an energy rarely found these days. From the dynamic opening track, ‘Energy‘, to the majestic crunch of ‘Thunder High On The Mountain‘, and the easy, sensual cords of “Smooth Soul”. This unparalleled rock-rhythm section gives ‘What Happens Next‘ a depth of groove that sets it apart from Satriani’s other work.

In addition to this new album and exciting tour news, a new documentary “Beyond the Supernova” shot by Satriani’s filmmaker son, ZZ, makes its debut at the Mill Valley Film Festival this October. The tour documentary chronicles Joe, along with his band and crew, on their last “Shockwave Supernova” tour throughout Europe and Asia.

Satriani’s Strange Beautiful Music: A Musical Memoir first released in May 2014 will now be available in paperback. Pre-orders are available now with the official release on November 7, 2017. The paperback version includes a new chapter focusing on Satriani’s last album, Shockwave Supernova. Read an excerpt from the new chapter HERE.

Joe says ”

I’m dropping this cool five song re-mix EP as a gift to all my fans who have made the ‘Shockwave Supernova‘ album such a great success around the world. I can’t thank you enough!

I called my most talented buddies near and far to get a new spin on five fan favorites from my latest release.

John Cuniberti and Eric Caudieux team up for both “Goodbye Supernova” and “Stars Race Across The Sky” and turn in two breathtaking and modern re-mixes.

Guitarist, engineer and producer Keith More from London, England, pumps up and mashes out two rockers, “In My Pocket” and “Cataclysmic”.

John Cuniberti revisits “Lost In A Memory” and turns up the modern textures and drama to make a very spiritual and powerful remix.

And, as a little taste of what’s to come in 2017, I asked ZZ to put together a short trailer for his full length experimental tour documentary about our “Shockwave Tour 2016″. He followed us across Europe for almost two months and captured the sound and the fury, and all the crazy stuff no one else sees from the audience. Filmed and edited in ZZ’s unique style, we hope to release the full documentary in the first half of 2017.”
