Jailbirds The Great Escape

Golden Robot Records (July 5th 2019)

Reviewer: Stephen Brophy

Jailbirds are an Australian / Irish 4 piece Rock band based in Dublin. The guys have been working really hard to build up a really good reputation and no shortage of fans on the local scene, so now is the time for their first Album to be unleashed on the public. Consisting of the MacDonald brothers on lead vocals/guitar and drums, Ed Orr on rhythm guitar and Jamie Trimble on bass these four young guys make one hell of a racket and live they are just electric.

The lovely acoustic into on the opening title track is of course a little misleading, there is no doubt in their sound that these guys produce classic Rock/Metal and that this is a fine opening salvo from Jailbirds. We get treated to 8 tracks on this one and there’s certainly differences in tempo and style throughout, which is always great.

There is something a little refreshing about this album, not sure I can put my finger on exactly what it is that’s drawing me back over and over, but it’s there, it’s a package rather than just a couple of individual tracks, but still there are highlights here, ‘Loose Canon‘ is just a kick ass rocker that like most of the tracks on this album will obviously translate brilliantly live. ‘Nothing Good Lasts Forever‘ has some earworm inducing catchy riffs that run right through the middle of it and ‘The Pilot‘ that again is catchy as hell and just pounds along and like everywhere else on the album Axel’s vocals are on the money with some strong backing vocals to kick it up a level, for me the best think about this one is that it’s most definitely a group effort, everything works in a tight unit.

There is a grit to this music, a bite, it’s not light and happy there are definitely elements of shade in this album, but at the same time it’s certainly upbeat and not grimm. When you get the chance to see these guys live please do, that’s when it all pieces itself together so nicely there is a ravenous feel to the live show, this is a hungry young band and that’s great.

For a first release this Rock ‘N’ Roll roller coaster is a thrill ride, elements of antipidean rockers AC/DC and Airborne are in the makeup but this is very much Jailbirds and hopefully they are here to stay, please check these guys out you won’t regret it if you like power rock that’s unabashed fun, a classic sound but still fresh and best of all it just gets in your head from the first listen.

Nothing Good Lasts Forever‘ is out now and is the first track taken from new album ‘The Great Escape‘, due for release on 5th July via Golden Robot Records.

The four on the floor rock anthem pulls out the best parts of Oz Rock legends, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Airbourne, throws in the groove of Thin Lizzy, the histrionics of Iron Maiden and the stadium sound of the Foo Fighters and delivers something sorely lacking in today’s overly PC music climate… Balls.

Jailbirds have been confirmed for Sunday slot at the mighty Bloodstock Festival which takes place at Catton Park, Walton on Trent, Derbyshire from August 8th through 11th, where they will be sharing the bill with the likes of Scorpions, Dimmu Borgir, Queensryche, Dee Snider, Hypocrisy, Soilwork, Ross The Boss, The Lazys and many more.

Jailbirds are an Australian/Irish hard rock band based in Dublin, Ireland.

The band is composed of four members, Axel McDonald, lead vocals and lead guitar, his brother Jay McDonald on drums, both of whom are the founding members originating from Sydney, Australia. Completing the raw and powerhouse sound of Jailbirds are Irish rhythm guitarist Ed Orr and bass player Jamie Trimble.

The band produce a unique, dynamic, energetic and explosive sound defining a new generation of hard rock thanks to a healthy appetite of Australian powerhouse rock bands such as AC/DC, Airbourne, Rose Tattoo and legendary Irish rockers, Thin Lizzy. Their high-energy live shows are a testament to the bands growing reputation and intend to leave no stone unturned when it comes to giving 100% in just about everything they do.

Following the release of their 2016 debut EP “BREAK THE SILENCE” which saw the band gain instant airplay in numerous countries such as the Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom, as well as features in esteemed publications such as “Classic Rock Magazine”, the band were signed by Golden Robot Records (Dizzy Reed of Guns n’ Roses, Kings X, Rose Tattoo) in August 2018 and are currently working on their debut studio album, which is set for release in July 2019.

The Jailbirds have just released a brand new video for ‘One Hell Of A Fight‘ taken from their ‘Break The Silence‘ EP.

Two Aussie brothers went to the other side of the world and started a rock n roll band…

Originally hailing from Sydney, Axel and Jay McDonald, the former a shit hot guitar player with the voice of a rock god, the later a tub thumping maniac, landed in Dublin, Ireland a few years back and hooked up with a couple of locals, Ed Orr, who plays a mean axe and Jamie Trible, a four string god of thunder.

Throwing all their influences in the ring, the Jailbirds pull out the best parts of Oz Rock legends, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Airbourne, throw in the groove of Thin Lizzy, the histrionics of Iron Maiden and the stadium sound of the Foo Fighters and deliver something sorely lacking in today’s overly PC music climate. Balls. Pure, unadulterated rock n fucking roll is what the Jailbirds are all about. Having a good time all the time. Big guitars, big drums, big smiles.

The band released their first EP, ‘Break The Silence‘ in January of 2017 and immediately got a stack of airplay in Australia, Germany and the UK and had a nice little piece in Classic Rock Magazine!

Since the release of their EP, Jailbirds have been busting their asses on the live circuit, supporting a stack of great acts including, The Answer, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Y&T and the mighty Anvil! Several headline tours of their own around Ireland have also got the Jailbirds in top form to record their second album, which will be their Golden Robot Records debut.
The as yet untitled album is scheduled for release later in 2018 as is a full blown European tour.
