Devilskin’s new song ‘Endo’, is a powerfully crafted and visceral masterpiece. Not only does it showcase vocalist Jennie Skulander’s incredible power, range and emotional depth but the lyrics are an honest and brutal narrative of her personal struggle with stage 4 endometriosis.

A poignant glimpse into the pain and distress that millions of women live with on a daily basis all over the world, the song ‘Endo‘ is Jennie’s cathartic exorcism of her own personal demons. “Endo is based on my surgery for Stage 4 Endometriosis, something I was unaware I had. The lyric “Break the mass up” is about having an 11 cm cyst (Endometrioma) on my ovary removed. This disease affects so many women worldwide, I really think it’s time we talked openly about it.

The band explore dynamic new territory with this moody, rollercoaster of a song. Recorded at Roundhead Studios with producer Greg Haver (Bullet For My Valentine, Manic Street Preachers), engineered by Simon Gooding (Alien Weaponry, Neil Finn) and mixed in Los Angeles by Ben Grosse (Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Stone Temple Pilots), the song was mastered in New York by Ryan Smith.

Devilskin display confidence and a mastery of their art with a delivery that’s both beautiful and bombastic. The gorgeous close vocal intro gives way to a crushing, all-powerful riff and the song twists, turns and totally engulfs the listener, just like the condition itself. “We’ve been writing a lot and really digging deep into the songs and the emotions involved. We have definitely evolved again as songwriters. We love to write our own rules, push boundaries and kick down barriers. You need to in order to grow” says band spokesman Paul Martin.

Deborah Bush CEO of ENZ, said that more than 120,000 girls and women have endometriosis in NZ and it can take 8+ years to get a diagnosis. The most important thing is to recognise the symptoms early and follow a recommended treatment plan to avoid symptoms interfering with schooling, career, relationships, quality of life or fertility downstream.

Director Shae Sterling has filmed a stunning and visually arresting video, which was creatively written with the band. “The subject matter demands attention, and we are confident this video does it real justice” says Paul MartinIt’s not for the faint hearted.”

‘Endo‘will be available on all digital platform services Worldwide including SpotifyApple musiciTunes, Google Play and will stream on the Devilskin YouTube page here.

Following an epic debut appearance at Download 2017  in a rammed tent, Devilskin proudly unveil the brand new video for the swaggering ‘Believe in Me‘.

The ‘Believe in Me‘ video was filmed while the New Zealand band were in the UK for Download, following a tour with Airbourne. This hard hitting love song is taken from their new album ‘Be Like the River‘, recently included in Metal Hammer’s Best Albums of 2017 so far list.

We had spent months looking for a director when myself and Nail stumbled across Shae Stirling at an awards night. Three seconds of looking at his previous work was all we needed to know he was our guy. A month later we are shooting it at the beautiful Elvaston Castle in Derbyshire. With incredible grounds, it really was the perfect location for this video. Grand and foreboding. It features the band in acting roles as well as performing. We had a lot of fun with it.” explains Devilskin’s Paul

The band even scared the locals during the shoot  locals “The location was open to the public so there were quite a few older folks walking their dogs and grandchildren around the forest we were shooting in. Nail and I were in full monster/demon makeup and body paint. We frightened a few locals but not as much as poor precocious six year old –  Poppy  who screamed the forest down from the moment she saw us. She wouldn’t move so her mother asked us to sneak up behind her and scare her out of the park.

History recently repeated itself for Devilskin as their new album ‘Be Like the River‘ entered their domestic album chart at #1 on week of release. Just 18 months ago their debut album ‘We Rise‘ spent 3 weeks in the pole position. This is unprecedented in rock music in New Zealand and is a testament to the excellence of Devilskin’s brilliant second studio album ‘Be Like the River‘.

Paul (bass) and Nic (drums) are father and son, Jennie (vocals) is Nics’ Aunt and Paul’s sister in law, Nail (guitar) is Paul’s evil twin.

Devilskin are writing their next album as we speak and  “hope to be recording in Jan/Feb and then get out and tour the world some more!

Finally,  the band want to say “Thanks to the friends we have made on our UK tours who keep coming back for more. We are having the time of our lives and we’ll see you guys again real soon! Meanwhile, enjoy the video!

New Zealand rockers Devilskin have released an Official Video for the track ‘Fade‘.

Following the empowerment and self-belief of the singles Start A Revolution and the introspective Never See The Light, sonically softer than its predecessors, Fade is just as relevant and just as powerful.

‘Fade’ was one of the first songs they wrote together as a band and they believe “its genesis really propelled Devilskin onto bigger and better things.”

Shot on a cold wooded beach out of Auckland, Devilskin wanted the beauty of nature as a backdrop to capture all the elements of the song, “beauty, mystique, power, passion and hurt.” The stark colour grading is crucial and  highlights the mood and intensity of ‘Fade’

Devilskin

Devilskin release their new single ‘Never See The Light’ on June 10th following their first ever UK tour.

‘Never See The Light’ is a rollercoaster of a tune, the powerful driving bass riff at the beginning is portent to the emotive power the song has. It’s truculent, compelling and gripping. The message and the emotion behind ‘Never See The Light’  is very dear to Devilskin’s hearts.

Following the empowerment and self-belief of the last single ‘Start A Revolution’, ‘Never See The Light’ is more an introspective reflection of loss and love.

Jennie wrote the lyrics after their dear friend Shoki Kamishima, who played bass in a band they knew, took his own life.   New Zealand immigration service wouldn’t acknowledge his talents as being crucial or viable to his continuing stay in NZ with his band.  He got deported and sadly took his own life.

Devilskin wanted the video to have a fun theme and lighthearted moments to honour the sort of person Shoki was. Produced by the band the video was filmed in a local nightclub, with fans invited to be part of the audience, donning crazy and weird masks and costumes to great effect.

Both Start A Revolution’ andNever See The Light’ are taken from their debut album We RiseThe album debuted at #1 in New Zealand and became the first album since 2010 by a domestic rock band to achieve Platinum status, while the critics have lauded its UK release.

We Rise, has now been in the Top 20 NZ Albums chart for 93 weeks while the videos for We Risehave amassed over in excess of 1.8 million views on YouTube.

The four piece Devilskin hail from Hamilton, New Zealand and comprise of the mesmerizing Jennie Skulander on vocals, the red bearded ‘evil twins’ Nail and Paul Martin on guitars and Nic Martin on drums.  Devilskin have already earned a formidable reputation by earnestly demonstrating commitment to unpretentious musical values: writing songs that have depth and passion, and a relentless touring schedule. In 2015 Devilskin have supported Mötley Crüe, Slash and Alice Cooper in New Zealand.  Their tactical instrumental attack is balanced by the seductive Jennie Skulander and her incredible voice that sweeps from whisper to roar, rips with power, drips with melody and captivates with sincerity.

Devilskin’s irresistible We Rise is at times visceral, urgent and magniloquent but is also tempered with tenderness, empathy, love and bare souls. “ ‘We Rise’ is a roller coaster of emotions and moods, just like life” enthuses Paul Martin “there’s definitely power and there’s definitely passion. The songs are very real, and brutally honest, just like our live show.”

Musically twisted and possessed We Rise combines gorgeous melodies of heavy, bombastic rifts, with streamlined hard rock anthems aimed squarely at the arena circuit, no one else does it better right now.

Devilskin are currently mixing their new album and plan to return to the UK and Europe later this year.

With the song’s strong message warning people against complacency, the abstract video touches upon pathos, desperation and fear.
