Whitesnake are streaming a previously unreleased recording of ‘Ready An’ Willing (Sweet Satisfaction)‘, recorded live in Glasgow, Scotland in 1984, and featured on the upcoming 35th Anniversary Edition of the band’s 1984 release, ‘Slide It In‘.

Whitesnake scored its first platinum-selling album in 1984 with ‘Slide It In‘, a release that has sold more than six million copies worldwide thanks to hard-rocking songs like ‘Love Ain’t No Stranger‘, ‘Slow An’ Easy‘ and ‘Slide It In‘. The classic album turns 35 this year and Rhino / Parlophone is celebrating with several new versions, including an enormous seven-disc boxed set.

Slide It In: The Ultimate Special Edition‘ will be available on March 8th. The 6CD/DVD collection includes newly remastered versions of both the UK and US mixes of the album as well as the 35th Anniversary Remixes from 2019, plus unreleased live and studio recordings, music videos, concert footage, and a new interview with Whitesnake founder and lead singer, David Coverdale.

Three other versions of ‘Slide It In‘ will also be available the same day. A double-CD Deluxe Edition includes the newly remastered UK and US mixes expanded with a selection of bonus tracks. The double-LP Deluxe Edition features the newly remastered UK and US mixes. And finally, a single-disc version includes the newly remastered brand-new mix of the complete album. The music will be available digitally as well.

Slide It In was always meant to be a structured, more electric modern take on the classic blues-based hard rock that Whitesnake were famous for, but our new Hook City Hooligan, Mixer Extraordinaire Christopher Collier, has hand-tooled this classic record for the 21st century,” says Coverdale. “Hearing all the performances so fresh and so clear after 35 years was amazing. Mel, Cozy and Jon’s playing on the record is as vital now as it was all those years ago. All the featured players shine. Not only did Christopher get the best out of the recording, but, he gives the album a fresh coat of sonic paint bringing it right up to date. I’m personally thrilled with it.

After releasing ‘Saints & Sinners‘ in 1982, Whitesnake reconvened the following year in Germany to begin recording songs for what would become the band’s sixth studio album, ‘Slide It In‘. At the time, band members included Coverdale, guitarists Micky Moody and Mel Galley, bassist Colin Hodgkinson and keyboardist Jon Lord. The album was initially released in 1984 in the UK, where it climbed into the Top 10.

Soon after, the band’s lineup changed. Jon Lord left to rejoin Deep Purple and Moody and Hodgkinson were replaced by guitarist John Sykes, and Neil Murray, who was Whitesnake’s original bassist. Prior to its US release in 1985, ‘Slide It In‘ was remixed while newly recorded parts by Sykes, Murray and keyboardist Bill Cuomo were added, resulting in two distinct versions of the album, both of which are included in this set.

Slide It In: The Ultimate Special Edition‘ features unreleased versions of every album track, including 35th Anniversary remixes made this year, as well as monitor mixes recorded in 1983. The set boasts more than a dozen unreleased live recordings from 1984 that feature an entire concert from Glasgow, Scotland, plus several songs from Jon Lord’s final show with Whitesnake in Sweden. The collection’s final disc unearths 30 tracks that cover original demos and early mixes for album tracks, as well as unfinished song ideas.

The DVD from ‘Slide It In: The Ultimate Special Edition‘ mixes music videos and live performances, all of which have been carefully restored and remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound for the first time ever. A newly recorded interview with singer David Coverdale rounds out the DVD.

Whitesnake are set to release a brand new live album, ‘The Purple Tour (Live)‘, on January 19th 2018.

Whitesnake’s new live collection highlights singer David Coverdale’s time in Deep Purple with performances of Deep Purple and Whitesnake classics.

Whitesnake revisited the music that singer David Coverdale recorded with Deep Purple in the Seventies when they released The Purple Album two years ago. The album, and the tour that followed, offered fans new modern interpretations of Purple classics like ‘Burn’ and ‘Mistreated.’ Highlights from the historic tour will be featured in a new live collection, including double-disc versions that feature audio, video and a selection of bonus material.

The Purple Tour (Live) will be available as CD/DVD or CD/Blu-ray sets. Additional formats include a double-LP, single CD, and digital version.

The Purple Tour (Live), Whitesnake puts their distinctive spin on several songs from Coverdale’s studio albums with Deep Purple – Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974), and Come Taste The Band (1975). Highlights include: ‘You Fool No One,’ ‘The Gypsy‘ and ‘Soldier Of Fortune.’ The double-disc collection also includes video footage of the concert mixed to 5.1 Surround Sound, plus a new music video for ‘Burn,’ band interviews, and a number of bonus performances not available on the CD or vinyl versions.

The Whitesnake line-up that appears on The Purple Tour (Live) includes: singer David Coverdale, guitarists Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra, bassist Michael Devin, drummer Tommy Aldridge and keyboardist Michele Luppi.

Coverdale says there was never any intention to compete against the original recordings. “We just wanted to play the damn songs. Each member of the band. brought their incredible individual talents and a real band identity to this music. We’ve all done the best we can with this project with respect to the music, and the legacy of Deep Purple Mk3 and Mk4.

In addition to songs originally recorded by Deep Purple, The Purple Tour (Live) also features performances of killer Whitesnake tracks like ‘Fool For Your Loving‘ from Slip Of The Tongue (1990), ‘Love Ain’t No Stranger‘ from Slide It In (1984), plus ‘Still Of The Night,’ ‘Bad Boys,’ ‘Is This Love‘ and the #1 smash ‘Here I Go Again‘ from Whitesnake (1987).

Whitesnake – The Purple Album

Frontiers Records (May 2015)

Reviewer – Stephen Brophy

There has been an awful lot of chatter about this release for the last couple of months. Yes this is Whitesnake doing an album of Deep Purple songs, the initial idea to work with Jon Lord never came to pass, but as with all albums I take it at face value and what we get here is an enjoyable romp through a specific period of Purple’s history while David Coverdale was at the helm as lead singer.
Honestly I thought the lead off track from this album was poor, and although I like the original version of ‘Stormbringer’, there is something about the reworking on this album that just doesn’t sit well. Personally I feel it just seems to have too many effects on it that distract from the song itself, but that’s not something that should stop you from giving the album a go. After all it’s only one out of thirteen tracks and you may well like it anyway.
So The Purple Album kicks off with the iconic ‘Burn’ which is a track I’ve always loved, having experienced it both on album and live from a number of singers. Coverdale handles it with ease and for me at least there’s always something different and generally better hearing the original singer delivering the song. And of course there are some great tracks on here, how could they not be, they are classics, such as ‘Sail Away’, ‘Holy Man’ and ‘Soldier Of Fortune’. The arrangements are all really good, but for me they haven’t been able to achieve the impossible and make a great flow through the album, it’s such a very hard thing to do with a collection of songs like this, but there are definite high points and the playing throughout is superb, some wonderful guitar work from Joel Hoekstra certainly helps to add a Whitesnake slant to a number of the songs.
There is bound to be some divided opinion about The Purple Album, and after all you can never please all of the people all of the time, but sometimes you just need to put up the volume, sit back and let it blast, take ‘You Fool No One’ for example, it manages to really rock along, retaining touches of classic and modern, with the ability of sounding fresh, there’s nothing wrong with being torn a bit by an album, but you need to give it a fair shake before dismissing it out of hand, something that is all to do in modern times, as I type this the huge grooves of ‘Love Child’ are bouncing around my head.
This is essentially a covers album, but it’s also a reworking, and in places an attempt to modernise some of the originals, and it’s a good job, but for a couple of tracks that don’t quite hit the mark for me. Having said that to hear Coverdale working on some of these classic tracks again is a joy in itself. This of course would have been a hugely more valuable project had the wonderful Jon Lord survived to play on it and I’d like to think he would have really enjoyed it too. Will be interesting to see how these tracks are received in the live arena, for me a lot of these tracks will suit Coverdale’s voice a lot more now, and that could be a very interesting mix with the Whitesnake standards that will be demanded by the fans. This was never going to be the best Whitesnake release, would be amazed were it intended to be, but it’s interesting, well made and contains all of the musical pieces of the puzzle, take a listen through this archive and make your own mind up.

“It’s a tribute. A homage. It’s a huge thank you from me to Deep Purple for the opportunity I was given over 40 years ago,” state’s Coverdale. “As I said to Ritchie, you guys set me on an incredible journey that continues today and I couldn’t have asked for better teachers. The University of Deep Purple was an extraordinary, amazing school to learn from. We can’t wait to play these songs in concert!”

From the opening notes of the classic track “Burn”, to album closer “Stormbringer”, Whitesnake are back and better than ever. Songs like “Lady Double Dealer”, “Soldier of Fortune” and “Sail Away” are given a new energy in the very capable hands of the current Whitesnake lineup featuring David Coverdale on vocals, Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra on guitars, Michael Devin on bass and Tommy Aldridge on drums.
