Review: Burnt Out Wreck – This Is Hell

Burnt Out Wreck (October 11th 2019)

Reviewer: Peter Scallan

This is the follow-up to the 2017 debut for Burnt Out Wreck. For those of you who don’t know, this is former Heavy Pettin’ drummer Gary Moat’s baby. However, he is the main songwriter and singer this time around. And a what singer too! Although I must confess to being a little biased here having watched this guy rip into AC/DC covers at The Venue Rock Xmas party and just think, ‘Git!’

The nine song album kicks off in arse-kicking fashion with ‘Dead or Alive‘. It opens with a riff that could sit comfortably on any classic AC/DC album. It rattles along at a fair pace and doesn’t let up at all except for a few breakdowns before kicking back up through the gears. From the outset ‘Positive‘ sounds like it could be from Powerage (my favourite DC album) and the song builds nicely into a massive bridge and chorus with huge vocals.

The amusingly-titled ‘Paddywack‘ opens up with a twelve-bar intro and the swings throughout with a great quirky chorus. We then have the straight-forward ‘Headfuck‘ which is most definitely not a song to be fucked with. While it has elements of AC/DC I can also hear other influences in there such as Judas Priest. The song just bulldozers its way through to the end and has another great chorus and some great guitar parts. ‘Guitars Amplified‘ is just that with the guitars cranked up both left and right. What a great riff the vocal melody is woven around – superb.

The title track ‘This is Hell‘ starts with a lone guitar and then another massive riff until the rest of the band kicks in – in fact with my headphones on they kicked my head in. While just as powerful, ‘Rock Hard Sticky Sweet‘ returns to more playful mood in terms of the riffage and story-telling and of course a killer chorus. ‘Just a Dog‘ moves to a more heavy blues style and grooves along nicely. There is also a very tasteful solo section too before the huge chorus kicks back in. And all too soon we are at the last song – noooooo! Entitled ‘Snow Falls Down‘ the song immortalises a famous rock pub in Glasgow called the Burns Howff. In fact if I am correct, the song is about the very last night the pub was open and as everybody spilled out into the snow filled streets we all started pelting people coming out the pub across the road. It got a little out of hand in terms of size and the police eventually arrived by which time I was standing watching on the sidelines. It was one of those I was there moments – and I remember that night Mr Moat!

Yeah – I know the album has a fair AC/DC influence and Gary sounds a little like Bon Scott in places. Yeah – I know it is hardly innovative or ground-breaking. But feck me, this album is chock-full of superb songs with more balls than an elephant after a vasectomy! It also has some superb lead guitar playing and a voice I would die for. So if this is hell, then hell ain’t a bad place to be my friends! Let’s all burn together!

Burnt Out Wreck  release new single & lyric video for Dead Or Alive‘ on Burnt Out Wreckords/Cherry Red. This is the first track to be released from their upcoming second album ‘This Is Hell‘ which is due out on 11th October.

Dead Or Alive‘ is a huge, riff riddled, classic good time rock ‘n’ roll tune and one that’s guaranteed to get you shaking off the dust and headbanging in serious fashion! A cracking track and an absolutely blitzing way for Burnt Out Wreck to start the lead in to the release of their second album.

This Is Hell‘ sees the band ratcheting up the pace with this foot stomping, ball busting hard rock album that’ll give the best of them a run for their money!
Quote from Gary Moat: “This is Hell, the title says it all. It’s a hard hitting, fast paced and more focused album. It’s an angry set of songs that follows on in the same vein as Swallow, but a bigger sound. It has drained me mentally and physically, made in eleven days start to finish, I cracked the whip on the entire band & they agreed it was worth it!”

Gary created Burnt Out Wreck in the summer of 2016. After penning songs for the debut album, he ventured into the studio under the watchful eye of Steve Rispin (Asia), and with Gary’s determination to create good time classic rock, the album ‘SWALLOW’ took shape and was released early 2017. After plenty of promotion and hard work touring the UK, the band returned to the studio to record the follow up, ‘This Is Hell’, a fierce, hard rocking album with a heavy punch and one that sees the band take a big leap forward.

Gary has a colourful history as the drummer and main songwriter for Heavy Pettin’, but for Burnt Out Wreck he has traded the drum stool for the microphone and has a hugely talented band playing alongside him. Gary’s vocal style developed in Mother’s Ruin, the band that rose from the ashes of Heavy Pettin’ in 1991 but in 2014, he shut the that band down in favour of song writing. Burnt Out Wreck‘s inception was unexpected but welcome! ROCK AINT DEAD….

An article in Tom Cannavan‘s Wine Pages.com on winemaker Andrew Norrie, who joined with Gary from Burnt Out Wreck and headed out on their Moat And Norrie venture:
(2018) Over the past couple of years I have reported on a few wines being made by Scottish winemaker Andrew Norrie, who after spending some years working with Pinalta in the Douro Valley, moved there and is now making a small range of wines. Interestingly, this wine (and a whisky) was made/blended for a British hard rock band called Burnt Out Wreck, and is being marketed to their fans, I suspect a project and musical genre close to Andrew’s heart. The wine is 80% Touriga Nacional and 20% Touriga Franca from the Tua Valley, foot trodden in lagars before four months in French oak. Deeply coloured, there’s a lovely violet edge to the fruit, pepper and a sense of elegance to red and black berries. Very pure, essence of blackberry fruit on the palate, a nice biting edge of cherry skin and plum skin acidity. Tannins do a good job here, nicely roughening the vivid fruitiness, in a balanced tangy finish. Anyone looking for more information can link up with Andrew on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/andrew.norrie.3

A quote from Andrew Norrie on how this all came about:
“The reason I invested in BOW was when I was working as a chef a few people that I worked with went on to be members of famous bands. I worked with Stump the drummer from the Almighty at the WM company in Edinburgh and we would talk about how he was thinking of leaving the catering trade to go full time into the music industry .When we needed a Kitchen porter while working at the RBS it turned out the guy the agency sent was trying to get Idlewild off the ground and he was trying to get some money together to record a demo .These are just a couple of examples of people who followed their dreams and I wished I had stayed in closer contact with them .

Friday was the night to listen to the Friday night rock show with Tommy Vance and I was hooked from the first time I heard that magical rock sound. The first real gig I went to was Saxon in 1980 in the playhouse in Edinburgh and I saw many a famous rock band there in the 1980s one memory that sticks in my mind is getting 6 of the belt at school the day after seeing Iron maiden on the killers tour I had been right up against the PA and my ears where still ringing , my teacher thought I was ignoring him in class but the real reason was that I could not hear him due to the ringing in my ears . I say Gary in his Heavy petting days in the playhouse supporting Ozzy and Kiss little did I know some 30 odd years later our paths would cross again.

Looking back. I kept asking myself what if. So, I decided to bite the bullet and stop wondering what might be and just go ahead and do it. As my interest has been in wine and spirits over the last few years I sounded out my idea of launching a whisky with Claire Moat the wife of Gary Moat and founder of Burnt Out Wreck . We both thought it was a great project to work on and the final product is a idea that was followed through and brought forth the whisky that is now being launched with a exclusive wine also in the pipeline. We decided that we both wanted something different and sourced quality over hype, after all BOW and their music represents them, with the Burnt Out Wreck name on the bottle you can be confident that you are getting a product that delivers on taste and quality after all its got our name on the bottle.”
