Review: S.A.Y – Orion

MelodicRock Records/Cargo Distribution (2015)

Reviewer: Dan Mann

S.A.Y  is the brainchild of guitarist Jan Åkesson and singer Peter Grundström who between them released six albums under the StoneLake moniker.

The Scandinavians have continually shown that they have the key to the chest of ingredients for making melodic rock, so I had high hopes for this release.

Kicking off with the track ‘Tragedy‘ you can easily see Tony Harnell singing this. Think TNT Lite and you’d not be far wrong. However, I could actually see Grundström’s vocals getting on some people’s nerves somewhat as the high notes do on occasion grate a little. As I’ve said on many occasion, if you don’t like the vocals then an album is pretty much dead.

I could break down each of the eleven tracks on the album, but to be honest it’s difficult to separate them as there are no real stand out tracks, and they are somewhat on the short side.

While this is in no means a bad album, it’s just not got enough bite for my taste.

Children Of The Drones

U.S alt hard rock band Venrez have released a new lyric video ahead of Micheal Schenker’s Temple Of Rock European tour this October/November.

Frontman Ven says “The band is excited about returning to Europe with another legend of rock n roll. Michael Schenker to me is a legend like Slash and Alice Cooper, both of whom we have toured with in the past. It’s been amazing to see the wonderful reaction our fans have had to the new album ‘Children Of The Drones‘ for our USA shows and the two tours in the UK earlier this year – we can’t wait to get back over in 2016!”

What's Inside

Rip-roaring, all gas-no brakes Hollywood, California rock n roll band Gundriver has just released their new video for the title track ‘What’s Inside‘ off of their debut album ‘What’s Inside‘.

Gundriver guitarist Tom Potter has checked in with the following update:

The song ‘What’s Inside‘ is about kicking ass. Our drummer Alex Rivas wrote the lyrics and I handled the guitars and production on it. The video was shot one day prior to the start of our 2015 North American tour as special guests of Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock. It was helmed by RSM Creative who is making some of the top videos in music right now and they’re great at translating what’s going on with the band. The constant left motion of the video was Stefan Anderson’s (producer) idea and having seen the high quality of his work before this, we just stepped out of the way and let him do his thing. It’s one of those songs that doesn’t need, and wouldn’t benefit from a story – it’s a real rock tune and a performance video fits the tune perfectly. We filmed it at a sound stage in Woodland Hills, CA (Los Angeles) with half of the room painted white and the other half painted black. Stefan had doom metal playing all day long between takes and we really enjoyed working with him and his crew. The whole thing was great and we’re looking forward to developing our image with RSM in the future.

Chantel McGregor - Lose Control

Guitarist and singer-songwriter Chantel McGregor is proud to announce the release of her highly anticipated new album, ‘Lose Control’, on Friday 9th October 2015 on her independent boutique label Tis Rock Music – her first studio album since her critically acclaimed 2011 debut, ‘Like No Other’.

After four years of touring and festival appearances, Chantel returns with a vengeance with ten new songs that not only salutes contemporary rock, but shows her gradual transition from conventional Blues to a harder, bigger and bolder rock sound with progressive influences.

“I’ve always been interested in the dark side of Southern Gothic literature, artwork and media,” says Chantel. “I wanted to create an album that reflected the imagery and themes of that genre. I drew inspiration from the TV shows True Detective and True Blood and studied the literary works of Tennessee Williams, Carson Mullers and Mark Twain. “I also surrounded myself with imagery from artists and photographers such as Walker Evans and Clarence John Laughlin, all to immerse myself in the sinister, dark world of depravation, magic and voodoo, writing most of the songs from the perspective of the disturbed flawed characters.”

Lose Control, sees Chantel channeling her guitar playing and song-writing into an exciting pantheon of rock crescendos and riffs, that will not only leave her devout blues rock fan base in awe, but will also lead them into a sonic journey that will take them into new musical territory, whilst sticking to her current obsession with all things Southern Gothic.  The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Livingstone Brown’s studio in Brixton over the space of 6 months, interspersing studio time with touring. Livingstone Brown, (Ed Sheeran, Bryan Ferry, Robin Trower), played the majority of the bass on the album, with Chantel playing small parts, and her touring drummer Keith McPartling, playing drums for the whole album.

Stormzone - Seven Sins

Out today, 3rd August via Metal Nations Records, Seven Sins is the fifth album from Northern Ireland’s Stormzone; featuring 12 brand new studio tracks sure to please fans of classic heavy metal having already went down a storm with the hard rock and metal media over the past couple of months.

A concept album, ‘Seven Sins’ is undoubtedly the band’s most daring to date with a story revolving around the illustrious Dr Dealer, a character that singer and lyricist John ‘Harv’ Harbinson has brought to life under various guises already through the Stormzone back catalogue.

Set in the 18th century, the album tells the story of the mysterious Dr Dealer, his travelling troupe of various gifted misfits and the Seven Sins Emporium into which he invites men to test their resolve and strength. “It’s hard to describe Seven Sins in one paragraph…” says Harv. “The story-line is so complex. It’s a very dark subject. It’s touch and go at times with regards to how far you can go with it, but at the end of it all there’s hope.”

On the twelve days leading to the release of the album, the band unveiled a series of videos, one per day, expanding on the story behind each song. Harv commented, “The Seven Sins storyline is a little darker, deeper and more extensive than can be portrayed in full within the lyrics of the songs on the album. So in an effort to do the whole adventure further justice and, at the same time, hopefully give people a chance to get to know the interesting characters involved, we have created a series of atmospheric track-by-track videos, one for each song, that allow you to delve deeper into what the Seven Sins theme is all about.”

Vocalist John ‘Harv’ Harbinson comments, “The preparations for the release of our new album, Seven Sins have been the most adventurous and enjoyable of any Stormzone release to date, and the results have been inspired by our belief that we’ve recorded something very special! Seven Sins is ambitious, it has stretched us as musicians and galvanised us as a band, there were no back seats here, each of us has given 100% in an attempt to make this new album as good as it can get. That is, of course, only to be expected, bands must give it their all and these days try to find new ways to stand out from the crowd. To that extent where we have also delivered is in creating a wonderful adventure with all twelve songs linked to each other in an interesting and exciting storyline that we know will grab attention and definitely appeal to dedicated fans of classic heavy metal. All the ingredients are there! We’ve banged heads, exchanged ideas, grabbed inspiration from each others contributions, delved into each others minds and combined to write, create and record this fifth Stormzone album on which we hope all listeners will hear the energy and dedication that we put in to making Seven Sins and therefore make it a favoured addition to their CD collection.”

“The preparations are now over, my ever-enthusiastic introduction to the release is over, but our Seven Sins adventure has only just begun! The new album is now available! Come and hear the music, taste the atmosphere, sense the adventure, meet the characters involved in the twelve song tale with a multitude of twists and turns and, hopefully, understand why we’re truly looking forward to taking this show out onto the road. Dr Dealer’s Emporium may just join us on our travels!”

Recorded at FireMachine studios and produced by guitarist Steve Moore, Seven Sins combines all the elements expected from Stormzone and the classic heavy metal genre – powerful guitars, soaring vocals and crunching bass & drums wrapped with classic melodies.

As well as the twelve album tracks there is more. The physical CD booklet includes a hidden code within its pages and fans will have the opportunity to enter it into the official Stormzone website, If they get the order correct they can download a further four brand new songs not available on the album!
